About this ebook

In September 1882 Inspector James Hadley is instructed by the Commissioner to begin a murder investigation in secrecy after the body of Charles Barrington, a high ranking official at the Foreign Office, is found alongside the naked body of a young man. Barrington was engaged in negotiations with the Russian Embassy regarding British troop deployments in Afghanistan. Suspicion falls on the Russian Nihilists, who murdered Countess Helena Petrovna a year previously, but this is dismissed as a young man named Roger Freeman, who visited Barrington at the Foreign Office, becomes the prime suspect. As the investigation proceeds, Countess Natasha Petrovna, sister of the murdered Countess, arrives at Scotland Yard to report the disappearance of her fiancé, Dimitri Viralovski, who is identified as the naked man found with Barrington. Viralovski was related to the Russian Ambassador and Hadley is informed that Cossack security men will also be searching for the killer. After attempts to trace Roger Freeman fail, Sergeant Cooper has a lead to the suspect when he sees a male impersonator singing in a music hall. Hadley confronts the killer and is attacked before overcoming the assailant. At the trial, the killer pleads guilty, but insane and is sentenced to life imprisonment in a secure mental institution.

Peter James Child

Peter James Child commenced his writing career in 1969 when he contributed 60 ‘one line’ comedy gags each week for an American Radio show called ‘FUNNYBIRDS’, which starred Goldie Hawn and Phyllis Diller. Then he turned to writing books and produced three technical books on the subject of Automotive Paint Finishes whilst he was the Quality Control Manager and Chief Test Driver at Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd. The books were sold world wide and are used in many technical colleges and universities. Now a full time author he has written 26 books, 5 technical and 21 novels, including the Michel Ronay series, which are amusing stories about a French taxi driver in Marseille, which have been well received. His latest novel, ‘The Macabre Murders’ is the 13 of the Inspector Hadley series set in Victorian times. He is currently writing another Inspector Hadley novel entitled ‘The ingenious Murders’ and more titles will follow this year. Alongside the above range of books are three very amusing and romantic stories about an angel called Eric. The second book entitled 'Eric and the Divorcee' is now available in eBook form while ‘Eric and the Twins’ is available in paperback and also an eBook.
