Warriors of the Night - Jake Jones

    Introduction

The title of this book, Warriors of the Night refers to two different groups. The first group of warriors would be those who are willing to break the law, and habitually break the law. The second group of warriors is made up of those who are willing to, and habitually make an effort to apprehend those who break the law. It has been said that if you work at a job you do not like, you’re just wasting your time and you will eventually tire of it. How true that is.

In this book, you will see that work both as a Game Warden and as a Police/Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Dispatcher is hard and on some occasions frustrating and scary. Both jobs are a rewarding and exciting experience for those who want to cross that line. However they are both hard work. That would even go for the dispatcher who might sit on their butt for at 7 hours out of every 8 on the job. That said, another old saying goes anything worthwhile doesn’t come easy!

Game Wardens are the eyes and ears for the protection of many species with regards to their survival. Perhaps the biggest group of violators would be the night poachers, or those who seek to kill deer, elk, buffalo, and the like in the darkness of night,. Game Wardens have a difficult job during certain times of the year. From late winter through spring and summer, the Game Warden has a relatively easy life (in most cases). It is during the hunting seasons that most sportsmen are in the field and most violations take place.

In reality, the Game Wardens task is to assist the Wildlife Biologist help maintain a certain number of species be it deer, rabbits, pheasant or squirrel, so the numbers remain relatively stable from year to year. Game Wardens in Pennsylvania worked both day time and night time hours.

Some states have what are called Wildlife Officers, or those officers who enforce fishing, boating and hunting laws. In other states Game Wardens and Waterways Officers (or sometimes called Waterway Patrolman) work for the respective agency, either game or fish.

My experience as a Deputy Game Warden was in Pennsylvania. I traveled the length of the state for official meetings on occasion, gave people citations for their violations, and in many cases had to testify if the violator decided that he or she might have a chance of getting off the hook.

I worked with approximately 12 other Deputies in my county, and we all worked under a chief officer whose job it was to keep us in line and to be sure we understood the law and enforced it. This is where I learned to enforce the law in the spirit of which the law was intended and not the letter of the law. In other words, we were told to use common sense in the enforcement of Penna. Game Laws. If the person made an honest mistake, perhaps they deserved to receive a warning rather than a citation. On the other hand, there were certain offenses that the common sense idea did not apply to. One would be killing a buck in doe season or visa versa. Another would be an intentional violation, i.e. night hunting.

Working as a Dispatcher for Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services was a totally different experience. During this experience, I worked for a Northern Arizona Police Department and a Sheriff’s Department. The experiences there were eye opening and much different than Game Warden work.

The Police, Fire, and EMS Dispatchers keep their various departments going. Without them, the cops, firemen and medics would have a difficult time deciding which calls are priority, who to send, and how critical the call really is. Through my experience, I’ve learned that for some reason, the police, fire departments and EMS crews sometimes believe that the Dispatcher can see and know things that the Dispatcher has no way of seeing, or knowing. Almost as if the Dispatcher is a mind reader or some kind of mentalist. That’s just the way it is, because many of those who are working in the field so to speak, have never spent a day in the Dispatchers room, so they just don’t understand.

Yes, there were funny times, sad times and downright scary times in my years as a Dispatcher in Arizona. Those times involved officers, citizens and other co-workers. The weather in Northern Arizona was warm in the summer and could be downright bitter in the winter. The work environment was clean and pleasant, but there were other things that happened that I never counted on when I became a Dispatcher.

Without law enforcement in America, regardless of which agency it is, life would be much more unstable and insecure. Police, Firemen, and Emergency Medical Services are as important to society as motors and props are to a plane in the air. Each department is an important pieces of the infrastructure of each city,
