Emotions are a human trait evolved from our earliest ancestral survival instincts. Emotions developed as tools to analyze and respond quickly to our circumstances and environment, in order to defend ourselves or flee. Just as in eons past, emotions are something we cannot live without, even during those times when we wish we could.

Many of us struggle with our emotions. We try to gain some semblance of control over our emotions, in order to respond in an appropriate manner of our choosing, versus off the cuff responses that are not arrived at with logic and maturity. We are all looking to be happier and at peace with our lives. Developing our Emotional IQ is a great way to put our emotions, and our logic in balance, thus improving our relationships with others and our entire lives.

Many have not learned how to feel their emotions and face them with an awareness of what they really are. Several definitions of emotions have been created to explain this abstract concept. A slight distinction separates feelings and emotions. A feeling is the response of an emotion, while an emotion involves an experience or situation, its interpretation, its perception and response to the particular experience.

Emotions affect us on various levels, as they involve a psychological, as well as, a physiological attribute. Emotions interconnect human feelings, thoughts, and actions, serving as warning signals for human beings to acknowledge awareness of the reality surrounding them. These feelings guide our actions through the proper application of our intellectual faculties such as perception, thought, memory, and reason.

Emotions guide our thinking patterns, our actions, and thus our reaction behaviors. They also affect our physical bodies. People who tend to ignore, repress, or dismiss emotions are prone to develop negative physical illness symptoms.
