The Truth About How To Heal Lower Back Pain - GJ Thomson

    MY BACKPAIN STORY

It turns out that I got started on my back pain early – at birth actually. You could call it a ‘head start’.

Following a car accident when I was in my thirties, I underwent a series of scans on my spine, which uncovered existing damage to the vertebrae of my neck, likely incurred at birth! My neurosurgeon at the time commented that this was a relatively common injury sustained by infants during child birth as they passed through the birth canal and out into the world. It’s no wonder people complain about back pain when for some of us we bring it with us!

Then, as a young boy I remember playing with one of my younger siblings on my parents’ bed in their bedroom. It was an old 4-post bed, with a very thick mattress set quite high off the ground. While we were sitting on the bed playing I somehow managed to shuffle backwards and off the edge of the mattress, falling straight down onto my backside on the hardwood floor, directly onto my tailbone I imagine. I’ve always remembered the lower back pain that came with that fall – the memory of it nagging at me for ages afterwards.

Towards the end of my primary school years I began to learn the drums (the sitting-on-a-drum-kit kind). It’s a pity I didn’t learn to sit correctly at the time. Laziness, as well as eventual cramping around my lower spine from extended periods of sitting without back support, made me slouch forward on the drum stool as I played. Subsequent years of sitting incorrectly like this, hunched over on the drum kit, did nothing to improve my posture or maintain my spinal health.

Many years later in my 20’s I took up learning Kung Fu whilst I was at university. It was in this environment, practicing at perfecting physical form and increasing my body’s physical capabilities that I began to really notice the limitations of my spine. Whilst sitting in a ‘butterfly’ position to stretch our groins, the Kung Fu teacher would walk around, placing a wooden staff next to our backs to remind us to sit up straight. I could never do it. My back just would not straighten like everyone else’s. Sit-ups would hurt too, but only around my back rather than my abs.

Whilst at university I travelled around the city I lived
