CHAPTER 1
On a cold Christmas Eve it was peaceful and quiet in North Pole Village. A light snow dusted the small, colorful houses.
A mile away it was very different. Outside of Santa’s Workshop the sound of hammers and saws carried on the winter air.
The busiest place was the giant hangar next door that the elves referred to as the ‘Sleigh Shed’. In the center stood Santa’s grand sleigh - a conglomeration of burnished wood and curved metal.
Santa’s giant bag of presents stood in the back. It was already twice as tall as the sleigh was high and the elves still had more to load. It looked unbalanced yet the sleigh stood firmly on the ground. That it didn’t tip over, due the large and heavy bag, spoke to the degree of its craftsmanship - and a little Santa magic.
Presents were loaded into the bag by means of a conveyor belt that moved the toys from the workshop into the shed, then to a platform near the top of the bag. A group of elves on the platform attached the presents to a crane and lowered them carefully into the bag.
Mrs. Claus did as she always did on Christmas Eve: She passed out cookies and milk to all the hardworking elves. She continued the tradition this year even though her belly was almost as big as Santa’s; her baby expected to come in a mere two weeks.
Suddenly she stopped, set the tray down on a counter and leaned against it.
What’s wrong, Mrs. Claus?
asked Fire Dragon. (The elves were named after the best toy they had ever made. When they made a better toy they changed their names which could be very confusing.)
My water broke,
Mrs. Claus said. The elves looked confused. Elves were generally clueless about most things except toys.
I’ll get you another water,
said Sky Scraper Blocks.
No, no,
said Mrs. Claus, I’m going to have my baby.
The elves stood frozen not sure what to do.
Call Santa,
Mrs. Claus said, Please.
Little Baking Oven pulled out his walkie-talkie and called it in. Santa was there in a jiffy. He wore red coveralls. His cheeks were rosy from running.
But he’s not supposed to come for two more weeks,
Santa said.
The doctor had offered to tell Santa and Mrs. Claus months before if they having a boy or a girl. Mrs. Claus said she wanted to be surprised and Santa laughed with his hearty, Ho, ho, ho.
In ninety generations of the Claus family the first born child had always been a boy. So Santa always referred to his unborn child as a he
.
Pack your bag, Santa and let’s go!
Mrs. Claus said.
Santa Claus turned to his crew: You heard the woman - double time, elves!
Yes, Santa!
they all responded.
The last presents were hurriedly loaded and the conveyor belt system moved out of the way.
Santa helped Mrs. Claus into the sleigh.
Preflight check,
Santa said, Reindeer harnessed - check, bag of presents tied down - check, computer status check.
We don’t have time, Santa!
Mrs. Claus screamed.
Alright, dear,
Santa said. He was hungry but the children always provided plenty of snacks and beverages for him and reindeer.
Go Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Rudolph.
Santa yelled.
Blitzen had very bad food poisoning the previous day and was not going out tonight.
In seconds the sleigh was up in the air.
I sure hope he comes quickly,
Santa said, Because I have presents to deliver.
Be careful what you wish for Santa. The baby’s coming.
What?!
Santa yelled.
Mrs. Claus was too busy concentrating on her breathing to answer. She just nodded.
Santa Claus,
