CHAPTER One
Boston Under Siege
It is the summer of 1775, the beginning of the Revolutionary War. For several years the British have occupied the city of Boston, Massachusetts, and most citizens who are determined to fight for American independence have fled. Under the command of General George Washington, a ragtag bunch of American colonists has surrounded the city and is trying to force out the Redcoats and prevent them from advancing any farther. The odds of regaining control of Boston from the British are hopelessly small, and the colonists are no match for the professional British Army, which has more guns and more training. The American leadership is anxious and desperate. But then one man has an idea. This is his story.

Humble Beginnings
Henry Knox was born in Boston July 25, 1750. He was one of 10 children. As a boy Henry was smart and curious so his parents enrolled him in one of Boston’s finest schools. But when his father left for work in the West Indies, Henry was forced to leave school to help support his family. He was only 9 years old.
Henry’s mother arranged for him to work at Wharton & Bowes booksellers in Boston, where he later became a clerk. Henry was an avid reader. He especially loved history and the stories of Greek and Roman battles. He even taught himself to read and speak French.
