    ately I have not taken much interest in the flesh piles that tread the earth. My underlings do an adequate job of keeping them tempted and tormented. They all belong to me, anyway.

    I need a challenge, something I can sink my fangs into.

    Oh, yes, there have been some bright moments in the 400 years since my Nemesis stopped raising up prophets. I possessed a Greek antichrist, have delightedly inspired the rise of the brutal Roman Empire and seen the desecration of the loathsome house of worship in Jerusalem.

    But it has been all too easy. No man of God like Elijah to make melancholy, no Jeremiah to throw into a pit.

    I long for those days again.

    Satan alludes that his Nemesis (God) has stopped speaking to prophets. Biblical scholars call this the 400 Years of Silence, a period of prophetic inactivity between the utterances of Malachi and the New Testament era. Amos, writing in the mid-8th century BC, prophesied a famine of the Word. In Voices of Twelve Hebrew Prophets (Baker Publishing Group, 1975), the noted British preacher G. Campbell Morgan wrote, Let it at once be observed that the statement does not refer to a capricious withholding on the part of God of His words to men. It rather indicates a condition of man in which he is incapable of hearing, of discerning, of knowing.
