About this ebook
Is the idea of self-publishing daunting to you?
According to a New York Times report, 81% of Americans aspire to write a book but few ever write one and even fewer ever publish a book.
The obstacles seem great, but as Martin Luther King said, "You don't have to see the whole staircase - just take the next step."
Whether you're an aspiring writer, have already written a book or are a trade published author looking for a different publishing direction, there is no better time than now to get your words out there through self-publishing.
This is not a motivational book.
Instead, this book walks you through the steps of self-publishing; from ideas on how to flex your writing muscles to word processing choices to finally seeing your book sold on Amazon.
Save your money. There is no reason to spend hundreds or even thousands on expensive, unnecessary publishing services. From editing, formatting and cover design to finally self-publishing your e-book on Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing, this book suggests steps and self-publishing tools carefully picked with those on a budget in mind.
Self-publishing is not complicated. In fact, it is a simple process. Simple, however, does not mean easy. Gleaning information from many bestselling self-published authors, and written by a bootstrapped self-published author of over a dozen books (8 which hit Amazon's category bestseller lists), this book will show you how you can write your first word to publishing your final product on Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing without even spending a dime.

Self-Publish on a Budget with Amazon - Jill b.
Introduction
I have to be honest. I never dreamt of being an author, self-published or otherwise. It started with the death of a beloved chicken, that led to the reinvention of the chicken saddle. Since we had a shoe-string budget, I marketed the saddle by pitching stories and articles to niche chicken-keeping and homesteading magazines on speculation. Some stories were accepted and published but I also saw my rejection pile starting to grow.
It was then that my husband suggested that I turn the information I had previously written into a book - How to Keep Backyard Chickens (available at http://byjillb.com). I’ve since self-published nine books. This will be the tenth. It is a book that I didn’t plan to write but is one that called to me and one that now needs to be written.
This is not a motivational or a marketing book. This book is not about how anyone can write a book or why you should write a book. I will not extol the virtues of writing and self-publishing. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme book. Everybody’s journey is different. Even if you followed J.K. Rowling or Stephen King’s writing journey to a T, your outcome will be different.
Beware of snake oil salesman who will promise indie authors the world. Self-publishing is like any business. Some people go on to sell millions of books. Other authors may sell none. There is no magic sauce. What works for one author will not necessarily work for another.
Everybody’s journey is different. There are indeed quite a lot of indie authors who have made a good living from their books. Some, like the likes of Amanda Hocking and John Locke have made a lot of money. Again, this is not a get-rich-quick book.
I will not promise you fame and fortune if you follow my steps and ideas. Instead, the intention of this book is to help beginning self-publishing authors to navigate through the world of self-publishing, as cheaply as possible without sacrificing quality. This book is not about cheating your readers. It is about working as best as you can with what you have to publish a book within reasonable means.
Why Do You Want to Self-Publish?
Before you continue down the self-publishing road, you need to know why you want to self-publish your book. Without a clear reason for wanting to write and self-publish a book, you may end up lost without even realizing it.
There is no wrong answer as to why you want to self-publish. Maybe you simply want to get your story or message out into the world. Maybe you’ve already tried the traditional publishing route and want to try something else. Maybe you want to publish a book to improve your business reputation, make money or perhaps to keep full control and maximum royalties for your work. There are many reasons why someone decides to self-publish. Being clear as to what your reasons are will help to provide you with a focus as you write, market and brand your book, as well as yourself.
As you think about your reasons, also keep an open mind - your reasons may change over time as you learn and grow as an author and self-publisher. When I wrote my first book on How to Keep Backyard Chickens, my main
