It is Mid-June, and I am preparing for a tour opening for Blake Shelton. I have been a Country singer for five years. I should be so excited about this opportunity to open for one of the biggest names in Country music. I was ecstatic when Mr. Shelton asked me to open for him a few months ago, but some things are different now. Back then, I was not afraid of my ex-boyfriend Justin. He and I broke up three months ago, and I thought everything was okay. Now, I'm afraid to go anywhere alone. I wish my sister Jamie was here. She would know exactly what to say to help me. Jamie is my sister and best friend. Lord, please help me today.
I am auditioning guitar players in a few minutes. My lead guitar player Steve, who has been with me since the beginning of my career, quit unexpectedly a week ago. I have not liked anyone I have auditioned so far. Hopefully, I will find one I like today. I really need to prepare for this tour.
Kylie, are you ready?
my manager Joe Matthews asks.
Yes. I'm coming,
I say. It's show time, Kylie.
I do not like the first two people who audition, but maybe I am too critical. I like singing a combination of traditional and modern Country music, and these guys can only play the modern Country sound. The third guy walks into the audition room, and I can tell right away there is something different about him. He's tall, has short blond hair, and blue eyes. Hmm. Maybe the third time will be the charm as the saying goes.
Hi, Miss Daniels,
he says.
Hi, and it's Kylie. There’s no need to be formal.
Yes, Ma'am. I'm Clay Lawson.
Mr. Lawson has a Southern accent. Is he from Texas? If so, what is he doing here in Nashville?
Before you play for me, can you play all the styles of Country music? I like singing a combination of traditional and modern Country.
I should have asked the other guys this question and saved time.
Yes, Ma'am. I can play anything you need me to.
Awesome. I might have found a lead guitar player.
Great. Can you also sing background vocals?
Yes, but your manager told me I would just be playing for you.
Oh. Well, I can hear you sing during rehearsal if you are hired.
Okay. Are you ready for me to play?
Yes.
He starts to play, and after a few songs, I smile at him.
Mr. Lawson, you are hired. Rehearsal begins Friday.
Great, thank you,
he says as he stands to leave. It's Clay by the way.
Okay.
We shake hands, and Clay leaves the audition room. I text Joe and tell him I hired Mr. Lawson.
I am finally excited about this tour preparation. I just hope Justin does not come around like he said he would when we broke up. I thought I saw his car in the parking lot this morning, but I'm not sure. I never want to see him again. What did I ever see in him anyway? Justin Chambers is the lead singer of a popular local band. One of our mutual acquaintances introduced us a year ago, and we soon started dating. He seemed really nice and said he was a Christian, so I did not hesitate to date him. Jamie came to visit and met Justin. She said he was not the right man for me, and oh boy, she was right. I should have listened to her and broken up with Justin, but I thought she was just being a nosey, interfering older sister. Justin threatened me when I tried to end the relationship, so I remained his girlfriend for a few more months. I ended the relationship three months ago when Justin threatened me again and hit me. When I date again, I want a man who is totally different from Justin. Most of all, I want someone who really is a Christian and lives out his faith.
I am in my apartment and have ordered pizza for supper when Jamie FaceTimes me. I think pizza is my
