Introduction

Being in the teaching/training line, as well as in the management line, I have had plenty of opportunities to gauge the abilities of my students as well as my professional team members. During this time I noticed that a large number of people would rather leave everybody else to do their work for them, instead of taking their own initiative and getting the work done.

For students, this was acceptable; after all, they had been trained by their parents, and by their teachers to do things a certain way and unfortunately that meant that they were not encouraged to use their own creativity or initiative to think for themselves and make their own decisions.

But this was not acceptable in adults, who were afraid to take decisions even in cases of emergencies, because they were scared that their decision would not be accepted by their superiors, who doesn't like initiative and self-starters on their payroll.
