Introduction
I quickly learned the difference between writing a book for a publisher and as a self-publisher: The key to being profitable as a self-publisher is quantity. I applied a similar model to self-publishing as blogging and YouTube content creation. You can write casually for fun, but if you want to be profitable, you must create quality in quantity.
There are two ways to approach the book market. You either create the market around your book or take market share from an already existing market. Publishers can create a market through large budgets and big names. Self-publishers succeed when they focus on taking market share from an already active market.
Many are surprised when they publish their first book on Kindle and find it’s not making the money they had hoped for. The main reason people fail in making a living writing books for Kindle is that if the first book or two they publish brings in abysmal monthly sales, they quit.
Persistent writers who push through are the ones who make it. They focus on the writing and use book service sites like HUGEOrange.com to hire graphic designers for covers, editors to polish up, and target marketing to ensure sales and reviews at launch for long term profits.
Not every book I write makes money. You can’t rely on a small handful of books to judge your ability to make money self-publishing, especially in the beginning. As with any success in life, you need to be consistent and persistent. As you will learn it’s virtually impossible to apply the tradition book publishing model as a self-publisher.
