About this ebook

Jesus told stories to give people insight to life under God’s rule. Stations for Parables of Jesus contains station ideas for every one of these parables of Jesus. The station suggestions are made bearing in mind that those running church services week by week do not have endless resources of time or materials. Therefore the ideas are simple and poignant and each parable has a short introduction to help understand its meaning and context. By interaction at the station people of all ages will engage with the story in such a way as to be able to see the application to their own situations. The study of parables therefore becomes an enriching and stimulating exercise for all twenty-first century followers of Jesus. The cataloging and cross referencing in the book will enable readers to easily locate the parable they wish to use and see if it occurs in more than one gospel.

Preface – Refreshment at the Station Series

People are always on the move. It sometimes feels that our world gets busier every day. But maybe it’s always been busy. Travelling is a part of life and when you look through history, travelers are a part of every culture and every time. While ease of travelling long distances has been vastly improved over the last handful of centuries, making travel that much easier for ordinary types, since the beginning of any recorded history, there are stories of people on the move. There are all sorts of reasons to travel, both then and now – to visit friends and family, to source basic needs such as food, water or shelter, for education or business, for recreation or relaxation, for the sense of challenge, adventure and discovery. No matter the exact reason for the travelling, when people move any great distance they need to take breaks.

Taking a break in the journey is a time to refresh. A time to pause and reflect on what has happened on the journey so far and what is up ahead for the traveler. The break in the journey is a time to replenish supplies and regroup. It’s time to check the directions, the map, the itinerary and the tickets. If there is enough time, the break can also provide some much needed rest for the traveler.

If we use travelling as a metaphor for the faith journey, then the break in the journey is part of that metaphor. The Refreshment at the Station series provides resources for the traveler on the faith journey.

A railway station is a place to stop and rest between train connections; to get off and stretch your legs on a long train journey, or the place where your journey begins or ends. At a railway station you often get some refreshments, or have a wander around to stretch your legs. You also need to keep your eyes and ears open to follow the signs, or listen to the announcements, to make sure you end up at the right platform at the right time so you don’t miss the departure of your train.

Almost everyone has a story of something that they have seen in a railway station, or in an airport, or a bus terminal. These are places where we see human emotions on display: the depths of despair associated with parting, as well as the highs of joy and delight as people are re-united. We see people who are on a journey. They are going to somewhere or they are coming from somewhere. They are on their way, they are just beginning, they are nearing the end, or they are somewhere in the middle. But they don’t stand still until they hit the station.

The station forces a stop, a pause, a time to reflect about where we’ve been and where we’re going. It is only a temporary stop, because no-one lives at these places.

So, in a faith or church context, a station is a place to pause, reflect, engage and respond to God’s involvement in our lives.

Rather than passively sitting, station-based worship allows members of the congregation (aka travelers) to become participants. Rather than being told about the Christian faith, each person is able to enter their own journey of discovery. Bringing with them their own particular background and experience, each one is encouraged to interact with the scriptures and seek God’s direction. The station captures a moment in time, providing the traveler with the opportunity to engage and refresh before moving forward on their journey.
