About this ebook
This book can relate to people in every level of spiritual growth, including those who have never experienced the pure love of God, his forgiveness of sins, and the assurance of eternal life with Him. In the latter part of the book even those who already have a deep personal relationship with God are challenged to seek even higher levels of intimacy with Him by becoming true disciples of His only begotten Son and by worshipping Him in spirit and in truth, for He longs for us to respond to his own infinite and personal love for us.

Greater Intimacy With Our Creator - Robert Eldredge

Introduction
According to the Bible, God will sometimes give us guidance by way of dreams. I once had a dream where a pastor wanted me to do a teaching. In the dream, I said to him, The greatest teaching to learn is how to become more intimate with our Creator!
While still dreaming, I began to prepare a teaching that would make our intimacy with God analogous to being romantically in love
with another person.
Then I woke up. Up until that time I had never even taught on this particular subject before, nor had I even considered it. It is therefore very unlikely that this dream came from my own mind.
Of course, not all dreams are Godly dreams, but the content of this dream had all the ear marks of one that was inspired by the Spirit of God. And since I felt this dream was from him, I immediately began to prepare myself with study and prayer.
A short time later a pastor did ask me to speak in his church while he was away, so it was then that I gave my first teaching on this subject. But the content of the subject was so broad, and the time constraints so limited, that I felt that the Lord really wanted me to write about this in a book. And even then, I knew I could only cover the basics.
If it is true that how to have greater intimacy with God is the greatest teaching to learn
(and I believe it is!), then I also wanted to learn more about this subject for my own benefit as well.
And if greater intimacy with God is analogous to being romantically in love
with another human being (and I believe it is!), then we should follow this methodology to find out what it means to be romantically in love
with our Creator.
I have to admit that I really did not want to write on such a lofty subject. I felt completely inadequate in my own abilities and experiences. On the other hand this might even be a good thing, for it may make me better able to relate to the average person who just wants to have a deeper relationship with our Creator.
This is therefore an independent and a non-denominational approach to the subject that is based primarily upon what the Bible already says, rather than upon my own personal experiences.
And just because I felt led to write this book, I hope no one will think that I have personally achieved perfection in all of these areas. Like the average reader of this book, I am also on my own spiritual journey towards greater intimacy with our Creator, so let’s take this journey together.
Chapter One
GREATER INTIMACY
Your Creator Loves You
The most important thing that you should know about our Creator is that HE LOVES YOU! And because he loves you, it is already his heart’s desire to have an intimate relationship with you!
And if this is true (and it is!) then what could possibly be more important than to respond to his love? That is why you and I were born!!!
Yes, God also loves the birds and the animals and the rest of his creation, but he especially loves those who have been made in his own image! We have all been given an eternal human spirit and free will so that we could respond to his love and have intimate fellowship with him throughout eternity!
Intimacy with our Creator was never intended to be difficult or burdensome. He has already taken the first step in that he has revealed his love for us.
However, if we should choose not to love him back, then there can be no intimacy! As with all love relationships, they cannot survive if they are only one sided. And since his ability to love us is limitless, the level of our intimacy with him is really dependent upon the level of our love for him!
Do You Know Him?
You cannot have greater
intimacy with someone you don’t even know! Before we can discuss how to have greater
intimacy, we must first establish whether or not you already know him and have an intimate relationship with him.
• You could be very religious
and still not know him.
• You could know about him
but not really know him.
Almost everyone believes that God exists, but not everyone knows him personally. This is what the apostle Paul also found to be the case when he first preached at Athens in ancient Greece.
Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said:
Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.
Now what you worship as something un-known I am going to proclaim to you. "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.
From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us." (Acts 17:22-27 NIV)
What Does He Look Like?
Our Creator is called by the prophet Daniel the Ancient of Days
because he has always existed. He even revealed to Daniel in a vision what he looks like!
He looks just like us!
Or rather, we look like him, for we are all descendants of Adam who was made in his image! Although our Creator can take any shape that he wants to, Daniel saw him in the form of a man with white hair and seated upon a fiery throne.
As I looked,
thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him." (Daniel 7:9-10 NIV)
The credibility and the reliability of Daniel’s visions are enhanced by the fact that he was then the first of the three presidents who ruled over 120 princes in the Persian Empire. He reported directly to Darius the Great, who reigned over almost all of the civilized world from 521 B. C. to 486 B. C.
And during this very same vision, Daniel also saw one like a son of man
who would ultimately be given authority, glory, and sovereign power
and whose kingdom will never be destroyed!
In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
(Daniel 9:13-14 NIV)
This prophecy has obviously been fulfilled by the only begotten Son of God who, after his resurrection, confirmed to his disciples that all authority in heaven and earth had been given to him by his heavenly Father! (Matthew 28:18)
The apostle John also had a vision of the Son of God in his present resurrected and glorified state. His hair is now white like wool,
so he now looks very similar to Daniel’s description of his heavenly Father, the Ancient of Days!
His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.
(Revelation 1:14-15 NIV)
We All Need A Mediator
Although our Creator loves us very much and wants us to seek him, he is very holy and righteous. That is why the only way that we can have intimate fellowship with him is through the intercession of a mediator who is also very holy and righteous.
There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men.
(1 Timothy 2:5-6 NIV)
The only begotten Son of God, who pre-existed as the Word of God, was made flesh and dwelt among us
just so he could be our mediator.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God ... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
(John 1:1-14)
The only begotten of the Father
took upon himself the just punishment for our sins so that all who would receive him could be reconciled with his heavenly Father! Like all good parents, his Father will draw
us towards his Son, but it is still up to us whether or not we choose to receive him.
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
(John 6:44)
Our first level of intimacy with our Creator therefore begins when we receive the overcoming Spirit of his Son into our hearts and become born again.
His experience becomes our experience, and his heavenly Father then looks upon us as being righteous and holy like his only begotten Son!
If you are not sure what it means
