This Inventing Guide was written to help Inventors find their way through the maze of procedures required by a large number of bureaucratic areas of industry, both government and private, and to eventually have their New Product pay a royalty income. CASE STUDY
A REAL LIFE Example
of the Basic Invention Process:
This Real Life Invention Case Study was carried out by the Author o ver 35 years ago. The principles are the same today.
I started with my first Idea (an Art Board Carrier) to make some real money. My job was paying for the family bills but with nothing left over.
I built a prototype and gave it to my wife to take to her Oil Painting Art Classes.
At the class everyone wanted one! We got our first orders for 4 Carriers.
Well that’s when my troubles started. My original was made of scrap wood and various old parts. I visited the local Hardware shops about 500 times looking for just the right parts to Mass Produce
them. Once I had Tooled-Up
for mass producing, I was able to make 10 Carriers at a time.
They sold like Hot Cakes
at $20 each. I was able to make them for $7 each, so I made a good profit on each. I continued to manufacture them on weekends and sold about 10 per week locally.
Then I decided to broaden out a bit, sell to other suburbs, other towns. Then to Retail Businesses.
Well, if I thought I had problems in my manufacturing area, the Marketing
problems turned out to be a lot more tricky. Firstly I knew very little about selling, marketing, advertising, etc. I knew even less about what price to sell to the Retailer. The Retailer wanted to make a profit too!

After trekking around to about 50 or so small private retailers of Art Supplies, I found several who said they would put them in their shop for free for a couple of months to see if they would sell. I wouldn’t get any money at all until they sold, and then only about 30% of the sale price. With a sale price of approximately $30 meant I would get $9 for each Art Board Carrier [but they cost me $7 each to make, therefore I would only get $2 for my effort].
Next I went to several large retailers of Art Supplies, ones that had shops all over the country. They said I would have to supply 100 Art Board Carriers initially and the sell price to consumers was going to be $30. Then their buy price from me would have to be $6 !! Take it, Or Leave it
.
Well, I then had to do my homework back at my Manufacturing Office [my Garage, the car was now left out in the rain].
How could I sell the Carrier to them at $6 when it was costing me $7 just for materials for each Carrier, let alone the time and energy to produce each one? With much gnashing of teeth, a lot of ringing around for cheaper materials, and trying to figure a better way of mass producing them, I came to the conclusion that for me to make money as well as the Retailer then they would have to be made for about $3 each.
My conclusion was that the only real way was to have the Carrier made out of Plastic and stamped out by the thousands. But the Plastic Stamping Tool was going to cost approximately $18,000 plus the up-front cost to stamp out 10,000 Carriers.
Well that Idea got put on a very high shelf, out of site. I still made a few for the local Art School but I guess my heart wasn’t really in it any more.
I let go, and said NEXT!
From this small Idea that failed from a marketing problem, I gained a lot of Business Experience
, and now have a better Idea on how to evaluate New Inventions and sift out the most likely to succeed.
