About this ebook
I have written this guide as an efficient self-study manual that presents what you need to grasp the fundamentals of PRINCE2 and understand it as a logical system. It is specifically aimed at readers who are studying for the Foundation qualification and want to get the most out of their study time. Although anything in this book can appear on the examination, certain parts of the method show up repeatedly, so at the end of the chapter you will find a list of the concepts you should review more intensively, along with study tips and tricks.
In the second part of the book you will find 75 sample test questions, followed by a separate section giving the answers and which element of the method each question is taken from. This way, you can focus on a particular area of PRINCE2 where you need to do more work.

Preface
PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a widely used method for managing projects, particularly in the United Kingdom as well as in other countries. I wrote this book to develop the reader’s working knowledge of all aspects of PRINCE2, with the goal of providing a truly useful self-study manual for the PRINCE2 Foundation qualification. The book is based on the most recent revisions to the method made in 2009, so it's as current as any other resource on the market today.
I've been a software developer for the entirety of my career, so I've seen a lot of tech companies come and go. After moving into management, I’ve had the opportunity to learn and compare several project management systems. Although PRINCE2 has been widely used in the UK and emerging countries for years, it's been slow to catch on in the United States. This is poised to change, because PRINCE2 is a practical, applicable method for ensuring that the management side of the project development process works to produce a successful result.
Thousands of pages have been written on PRINCE2. It's easy to get bogged down in the minute details and lose track of the important points.
If you're already qualified at the Foundation level, you can also use this book to brush up on your PRINCE2 knowledge before you start to prepare for the next level of qualification. It can also be used in management practice as a ready reference guide. In the writing of this book, I strived to organize the material in a logical pattern to make learning it as fast and easy as possible.
Grateful acknowledgment is made to the Office of Government Commerce in the United Kingdom, and to APMG International for leading the way in developing the PRINCE2 method and the Foundation examination.
You’ll find that the PRINCE2 Foundation exam is a worthwhile challenge. I believe that the key to passing it is developing a strong sense of how all the parts of the method fit together. I hope this book leads you to a deeper understanding of PRINCE2 and ultimately helps you reach your goal of obtaining your Foundation qualification.

PART I PRINCE2: LAYING THE FOUNDATION
Introduction The Big Picture of PRINCE2
Before you can implement the PRINCE2 method or pass the PRINCE2 Foundation examination, you need to understand the components and how they all work together. Because PRINCE2 is an integrated system, the parts often have multiple relationships with other parts. Except for the Processes element (see Chapter 3), PRINCE2 is not a linear series of steps, where you finish one and then begin the next one. It's more like a spider's web – each strand supports the entire system.
Whether you're an experienced project manager looking for a more efficient way to do your job, or simply studying to pass the Foundation exam, mastering PRINCE2 will require you to learn some new vocabulary words for the pieces that make up the model. At the same time, you need to pay attention to how all of those pieces fit together and support one another to deliver a finished project.
The easiest way to pass the Foundation exam is to first understand the big picture as explained in this chapter. Then the upcoming chapters will delve into a more granular approach with specific details.
What is PRINCE2?
In a nutshell, PRINCE2 is a project management method that lays out a specific set of processes for starting, managing, and finishing a project. These processes provide guidance for the management team as they direct, develop, and deliver a product, from beginning to end. PRINCE stands for PRojects IN Controlled Environments. This non-proprietary methodology was first developed in 1989 by the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) in the United Kingdom to manage projects in an information technology environment. The 2
denotes the major revisions to the method that took place in 1996, which were intended to broaden the method beyond information technology so it could be applied in any field. The most recent revisions were made in 2009.
PRINCE2 is used in well over 100 countries around the world, and the number is growing. The method is widely respected for its broad applicability in a nearly endless variety of settings. It works equally well for large- and small-scale projects, in organizations ranging in size from multinational corporations to small startups with bootstrap funding. It has been applied in large industrial countries, and in emerging economies with limited resources. And while PRINCE2 is an excellent way to manage technology-oriented projects such as software development, it is by no means limited to IT. The method has also been used to produce movies, carry out mergers of large companies, and construct the facilities for the London 2012 Summer Olympics.
The reason that PRINCE2 works so well is because it efficiently separates a project's management level from its specialist level. PRINCE2 exclusively focuses on developing a precise process at the management level so that the specialists can do their work more efficiently. To use a very basic example, a construction project manager needs to coordinate numerous specialists, from concrete finishers to framers to roofers to drywall hangers to electricians. Without a project management system, the drywall hangers might arrive at the construction site before the electrician and get paid while they wait for him to arrive – or worse, they might go ahead and hang the drywall, only to have it torn out so the wiring can be installed. There's nothing wrong with the drywall crew or the electrician – the problem lies in the management of the project. PRINCE2 ensures that the management layer anticipates all potential problems, and it allows the integration of as many specialists as are needed to complete the project.
Qualification in the PRINCE2 method can be earned by taking an officially administered examination. Obtaining credentials in PRINCE2 by taking the exams and progressing through the levels of qualification is a smart career decision that can lead to better job prospects. It can also make you a more competent, confident manager who is ready to take on the most complicated project in the company and use it as your opportunity to shine.
