    Author Bio

    Jane Bowers has been training dogs for over two decades. She teaches people to train their dogs in group and private training courses and has a keen interest in assisting dogs with behavioural issues. Jane has a monthly newspaper column on dog related topics and was a former host of a live call in TV show on animals. She is a strong advocate of force free humane training methods for all animals.

    Jane has a degree in psychology and is certified as a dog trainer through the Certification Council of Professional Pet Dog Trainers and as a behaviour consultant through the International Association of Behaviour Consultants and through the Association of Animal Behaviour Professionals. These organizations require a minimum number of continuing education units be obtained to retain certification.

    Jane teaches in the Professional Dog Walker Certification Program at Langara College in Vancouver, B.C. She is the content creator of the online course Assessing and Interpreting Dog Behaviour, which is a course for law enforcement personnel who meet unfamiliar dogs in the course of their duties.

    Jane lives on a small farm with dogs, sheep, donkeys, and chickens. The dogs all came from situations which prevented them from living in their original homes. The dogs range in size and age and assist with the dog training and behavioural work, whether it’s participating in the development of an online training course, working with a client’s dog, or tracking a lost pet or animal.

    ~~~~~
    Chapter 1: Choosing Your Puppy
    You and your puppy are going to spend a great deal of time together. You want it to be fun and full of good experiences for both of you. It’s important you suit each other, so you need to choose your puppy carefully.
    There are many things to consider when choosing a puppy: your lifestyle, your energy level, your interests and activities, the space you have to offer the dog, and whether you or the people you spend time with have any allergies to dogs. All of these factors should influence what type of dog you choose.
    Which Breed is Right for Me?
    Before getting a puppy, take the time to research breeds. Talk to people with dogs of the breed, or mixed breed, you are interested in. Make sure the breed or mixed breed you choose is a good match
