Swirling wind and dusts is no match for a boy and his sister’s determination to rescue some animals. Another character’s quick thinking to remain calm and tolerant allows him to trap the burglar. A boy determination to see his father, who has a life-threatening illness, pays off. Three kids help stop a bully from frightening the community people at night. Another youngster is relentless in his pursuit of the gift his grandmother promised him if he made it to high school. An eight-grade boy’s classmates mock him for having long legs. The boy put his legs to use when he outruns another boy and stops him from stealing food from the people in the community. A boy is good at many sports except swimming. When his class upcoming swimming trip nears, he decides he must learn how to swim. A boy witnessed a bully robbing a girl and running away. When a police officer shows up, the boy takes off because he fears telling on a bully. When he hears, on TV, that he is the suspect and not the bully, he knows he has to go to the police.

Author’s Note

I received the inspiration to write the stories for The Little Big Thinkers by studying the actions of my two sons at ten and thirteen years old. From observing them in action, I realized there is nothing little about children choosing right over wrong, bravery over cowardice and success over failure.

Besides my kids, most of the children I have met reminded me of skilled circus performers who dazzle their audiences with acts no one thought was possible. While I was inspired, to portray the actions of talented and courageous kids, I learned a lot about how children like to be in command and enjoy outsmarting adults. For example, a boy in one of the stories in The Little Big Thinkers uses quick thinking to trap a burglar in a basement. In another story, a boy, his sister, and friend also use their creative thinking skills to stop a mischievous kid from frightening the community people at night.

I not only studied my sons’ and other kids’ behaviors in preparing to write these stories, but I also drew on my own childhood experiences in Norway, a small community in Jamaica, West Indies.

I have done different types of writings over the years, but writing for children is the most enjoyable of all.

Although the tales in The Little Big Thinkers are about children, some adults might enjoy reading them. This is particularly the case of the adults who select books for kids and like reading to them. I think many grown-ups (I am one of them) would agree that learning from and about kids never stops.

Therefore, turn the page and continue your reading-journey through this action-packed world of young protagonists and antagonists. As you fall in and out of love with these high-energy youngsters, I hope you have as much fun reading about them as I have writing about them.
