About this ebook

Having written two novels of 85 and 320 thousand words, respectively, I wonder about Simplicity and its role in helping craft jewels of literature in any genre, and set some thoughts to screen in this Broadsheet.

About The Author, Wim BarenWim Baren is the author’s pen name. He lives a stone’s throw from Colonial Williamsburg, a place rich in history. He imagines himself a novelist. He’s written two full-length tales set in long-ago times. He’s also written a couple of short stories, and a bunch of short broadsheets about his creative writing experiences and insights. All of these are on Smashwords, and almost all of them are free.As of the date of this writing, he’s feverishly inventing two new tales, also set in ancient times. One is a sequel to “The Crimson Emperor” – a fabulously romantic tale about Byzantium known by practically nobody – and another is an alternative history surrounding the Empress Theodora of Byzantium, a larger-than-life novel about the most powerful woman in the 6th century world at the time. That period of the Eastern Roman Empire did not lack excitement, to say the least...So, with a spouse he dotes upon and a pleasant prospect over which his front entrance looks to stimulate his thoughts, he’s got a quiet and most enjoyable lifestyle. Would that everybody could enjoy the same, or more...Thought and ideas are welcome, courteously done.mailto:wbwemple@aol.com

The Theme: We can perfect ourselves as competent human beings

Is being ‘human’ really a skill in which we can seek competence?

How do we do that?... And why is it good?...

These inspirations follow my thoughts about mastering those highest and best qualities of Character. I believe when we do so, we will achieve serenity for our soul, and goodness for others.

This is a path to uplift anyone up, to enable them to become as truly competent as possible at what it is to be a human being…

What does it mean to be a ‘competent human being?’

A competent human being understands himself or herself well enough to guide themselves selflessly in any situation.

Freed from narrow self-concerns, they can uplift themselves, and others, to the sublime blessings of mutual shared understanding and deeper wisdom.

Now, being ‘competent’ means demonstrating a high degree of recognizable skill at whatever we are competent at.
