About this ebook

A sighting of the rare frangipani fruit fly sends Lilly's scientist parents off in search of the fabled Shipwreck Islands. In this Smithsonian's Notable Book for Children, Lilly awaits their return at the home of her great-uncle Ernest, the chief librarian of Mundelaine, a town that seems to have more than its share of piratical-looking characters lurking about. When news comes that her parents' ship has wrecked, she must overcome her fear of the sea, find the hidden island, and outsmart a bunch of treasure-hungry pirates to save the day.

Lilly has always lived in far flung places with her scientist parents. But while they thrive on discovering and studying, Lilly worries about anything and everything and would rather read about he favorite sleuth, Millicent Murray. So when their next adventure is to study the Frangipangi Fruit Fly on the treacherous Shipwreck Islands, they send her to stay with her Uncle Ernest, librarian, and assure her they'll send regular notes via seagull to let her know they're fine. When they send a note saying they were shipwrecked, just as she meets the new lady next door neighbor who happens to be a pirate, Lilly gets brave enough to become a pirate herself and hop on a boat to save her parents. Even though they hit all kinds of sea adventures, she's so busy helping to keep the ship on course that she barely has time to worry. Turns out, she kind of likes it too. They find her parents and a famous pirate (whose treasure turns out to be books) and everything works out quite well in the end. A very quick and fun read that inserts the joy of reading in a lighthearted way.
