About this ebook

Some manufacturing problems are relatively small or simple and are dealt with as part of the normal routine. When larger problems are significant enough to discuss in a meeting they often need a concerted effort to resolve. One method of dealing with these problems is to manage them like a project. This book describes how small teams can resolve large problems using the project approach, often with huge impact and with little use of resources. The key to this approach is a structured and managed methodology with consecutive steps such as used in Kaizen projects. This is a book on using the project management approach to solving larger problems in manufacturing. The methods used are explained in detail including a worked example. This is a precise guide with no anecdotes or extraneous material.

I am going to be sixty this year and feel I've led a fairly interesting life starting in Glasgow in Scotland and after a period of thirty years in South Africa I have been in Australia for the last sixteen years. My working life has been mostly in manufacturing and quality management. I'm 'Joe Average' in most respects and been through most of what you'd expect for someone my age. As I grow older though I am happier too. This is mostly due to my wonderful wife and an attitude to life that often only comes with the years of experience.Since studying psychology at university in the late 1980's I have always been interested in motivation and the reasons why people do what they do. I've often thought about what gets people up in the morning and motivates them to go on every day. From many hours of debate on this and similar subjects and wide reading I conclude that it's growth that motivated us. We either grow in ourselves, learn as we do to solve life's problems or we don't. If we don't we are doomed to a life of relative unhappiness, sometimes without really being aware of our situation and what we can do to change things.

    Chapter 1

    The introduction

There are many types of problems and many types of problem solving methods to tackle them with. When problems are fairly complex and far reaching they are often solved through a project type problem solving approach. This means that rather than working through a problem and finding the best solution for it in a few hours or days, we need a sustained effort over a lengthy period of time. The difference between taking a few hours or days to solve a problem and taking months is related to the complexity of the problem and the resources needed to effect a solution. When problems cost tens of thousands of dollars per year and has gone unresolved for a period of time it is usually because no individual can provide an answer to it. No one can put their finger on the root cause of the problem and provide a positive solution. This sometimes happens but is not a common occurrence. Understanding exactly what is wrong, finding the real, underlying cause and applying one of more solutions requires team work and sustained effort. This is where the project type problem solving approach comes into its own. This is a straight forward and easy to understand process of problem solving with examples which has the potential to save very significant sums of money. Projects can be used either to solve problems or to make an improvement in a process. In this book we will discuss the problem solving aspect of projects.
