About this ebook

In the tradition of The Red Tent, The Fifth Mountain, and The Mists of Avalon comes this absorbing historical novel that reimagines the life of one of the Bible's most revered women, the prophetess Deborah, and her epic journey to fulfill her destiny.

Deborah's father dreamed that his daughter would one day become a prophet of the God of the Israelites. But the social and religious mores of her time dictated that a woman must marry—even against her will—and obey her husband. When Deborah is forced into an engagement with the violent son of her local judge, the young Hebrew woman rebels, determined to forge a new path.

Captivated by the notion of transforming herself into a man to escape the arranged marriage and fulfill her father's dream, Deborah embarks upon an epic journey across the desert to find a mysterious elixirist rumored to be blessed with the gift of turning women into men. It is a journey that proves increasingly perilous—filled with wild beasts, lustful men, unscrupulous priests, and warring tribesmen. Yet Deborah discovers that she is not alone; an unlikely coterie of lepers, slaves, Moabite traders, and even a dead tiger come to her aid and defense along the way.

Part traditional biblical fiction, part adventure, Deborah Rising is a captivating tale about the early life of one of the most famous figures from the Old Testament—a woman of courage and spirit whose battle to overcome discrimination, sexism, and paternalism speaks to women's lives today.

Avraham Azrieli

Avraham Azrieli, a graduate of Columbia Law School in New York City, tried many complex court cases before publishing his first novel, The Masada Complex (a political thriller) in 2010. A full-time author since then, his other books include the Israeli spy novels The Jerusalem Inception and The Jerusalem Assassin, as well as Christmas for Joshua (a family drama dealing with interfaith conflicts), The Mormon Candidate (a political thriller), Thump (a courtroom drama featuring sexual harassment and racism) and The Bootstrap Ultimatum headshot(a mystery involving the commercialization of Memorial Day). He also authored Your Lawyer on a Short Leash (a guide to dealing with lawyers) and One Step Ahead (a WWII biography, which inspired the musical By Wheel and by Wing). Avraham grew up in Israel, where he received extensive Talmudic education, served as an intelligence officer and, after attending law school, clerked for the Israeli Supreme Court in Jerusalem. Residing primarily in the United States since 1990, he currently lives near Washington DC with his wife, a physician, and their four children. Like Ben Teller, the protagonist in The Mormon Candidate and The Bootstrap Ultimatum, Avraham often rides his motorcycle in the mountainous forests of western Maryland. www.AzrieliBooks.com

Deborah is the younger of two orphaned sisters who live in the town of Emanuel in Ephraim under the rule of Judge Zifron. Deborah's older sister, Tamar, has just been married to Zifron's son, Seesya. After their wedding night, Seesya produces “evidence” that Tamar was not a virgin and has her stoned as the whole town, including Deborah, looks on. It isn't long before Seesya selects Deborah as his next bride. Deborah has no male family member to protect her from this unwanted marriage. When Deborah expresses a wish that she were a man, her friend Barac tells her of the women of Edom who turned into men to win a battle against Egypt, thanks to a potion made by the Elixirist. Deborah learns that the Elixirist might still be alive, and she sets off on a quest to find him and get him to turn her into a man.Deborah was a biblical prophetess and judge who appears in chapters 4 and 5 of the book of Judges. The Bible is silent about how Deborah became a leader in Israel. Azrieli's novel creates a back story for her. Azrieli draws some people and places from the Bible, while others are fictional. There are occasional anachronisms, like the mention of going to a town's temple. The tabernacle was the place of worship during the time of the judges, and the temple wouldn't be built until Solomon's day. Readers should be aware that Deborah's story will continue in a subsequent novel, and this one ends without a resolution of the main conflict. I liked it well enough to pre-order the sequel, which is set for release next Tuesday.
