SEAMS
RUN-AND-FELL OR FLAT SEAM
THIS is the strongest seam for any purpose; being smooth also, it is recommended for all underclothing and babies’ clothes.
It can be used for slight curves provided the turnings are very narrow.
For side or under-arm seams the turning must be towards the back of a garment.
When hemming or felling is used the seam is turned and sewn on the inside of the garment.
If back-stitching is used in place of running and hemming the seam is turned and stitched on the right or outside of the garment as in men’s shirts.
HEM-STITCHED FLAT SEAM
A strong, smooth seam bordered on each side by hem-stitching which gives it a light and decorative effect.

For curved or sloping seams where threads cannot be pulled out the open-work effect is obtained by punched hem-stitching.
Method. On each of the pieces of material to be joined together a group of three or four threads is withdrawn about 3/4 in. from the raw edge.
