This was followed by the publication of his novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (1985), which was enormously successful, and The Pigeon (1987), which tells the story of a security guard who keeps his life meticulously organised in order to avoid the unexpected. Süskind has also worked as a screenwriter for television, and his writing stands out for its masterful portrayals of isolated individuals and their obsessions.
