One of the most successful and lauded female vocalists of all time honed her powerful and soulful voice in the company of a powerful family of Motown and Gospel music royalty. Born to sing, Whitney Houston received mentorship in the shadows of her talented relatives before exploding onto the music scene to become a music legend in her own right. However, though Houston’s voice had the power to reach angelic heights, her own personal life was plagued with martial difficulty and deep-seeded demons. The bright-eyed girl from Newark, New Jersey would later find her life descending into a dangerous battle with addiction and anxiety. The story of one of the greatest singers of all time is one that is both inspiring and cautionary.

    Early Mentorship

Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1963, Whitney Houston had singing in her blood, literally. Houston’s mother, Cissy Houston, was a well-known gospel singer who was part of the Drinkard Quartet, while her father, John, was an entertainment executive. Houston’s cousin was legendary R & B singer Dionne Warwick. Her godmother was gospel singer Darlene Love. Her honorary aunt was even more legendary R & B powerhouse Aretha Franklin. At a young age, Houston was taught vocal technique and the art of performing in front of an audience.
