About this ebook

Leaky Gut Syndrome (Intestine Permeability) is a medical disorder that happens when the wall of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract is damaged.
A healthy intestinal wall permits only nutrients to pass into the bloodstream.
When the intestinal wall is injured or impaired, larger molecules (such as incompletely digested fats, proteins and toxins) pass through, as well.
The intestinal wall barrier of a healthy intestinal mucosa is not a complete one to start with.
Small amounts of molecules of different sizes and features do pass through the intact epithelium by both active and passive methods.
Normally, the larger the molecule, the more unlikely it is to be permitted across.
When the intestinal lining becomes inflamed or injured, it becomes harder to keep foreign, large particles out.
The intestinal wall barrier becomes permeable or penetrable for large particles.
When the spaces between cells widen up, larger particles are permitted to be absorbed into the body.
Normally the body observes only tiny food antigens and restricted quantity of bacteria.
In LGS, the wall of the small intestine becomes inflamed and irritated allowing metabolic and microbial toxins normally remaining within the small intestines to pass into the colon to enter the blood stream.
In medical terms this is called increased intestinal permeability.
Leaky Gut is a primary provider for asthma, food allergies, chronic sinusitis, eczema, urticaria, migraine, irritable bowel, fungal disorders, fibromyalgia, and inflammatory joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.
It also adds to PMS, uterine fibroid, breast fibroids, chronic fatigue syndrome and pediatric immune deficiencies.
The four main causes of leaky gut are:
1. Poor diet
2. Chronic stress
3. Toxin overload
4. Bacterial imbalance
Leaky Gut Symptoms are:
1. Bloating
2. Food sensitivities
3. Thyroid disorders
4. Fatigue
5. Joint pain
There is a four-step treatment process that :
1. Remove foods and factors that damage the gut
2. Replace with healing foods
3. Repair with specific supplements
4. Rebalance with probiotics
There are many supplements that hold up the digestive health, but the most advantageous leaky gut supplements are l-glutamine, probiotics, digestive enzymes, aloe vera juice, quercetin, NAG and licorice root.
Some doctors believe lifestyle alterations, such as decreasing stress and enhancing nutrition, may be the best methods to treat symptoms due to leaky gut syndrome.

    Introduction

I have been writing medical articles for my blog http://kennethkee.blogspot.com (A Simple Guide to Medical Condition) for the benefit of my patients since 2007.

My purpose in writing these simple guides was for the health education of my patients.

Health Education was also my dissertation for my Ph.D (Healthcare Administration).

I then wrote an autobiolographical account of his journey as a medical student to family doctor on his other blog http://afamilydoctorstale.blogspot.com.

This autobiolographical account A Family Doctor’s Tale was combined with my early A Simple Guide to Medical Conditions into a new Wordpress Blog A Family Doctor’s Tale on http://kenkee481.wordpress.com.

From which many free articles from the blog was taken and put together into 700 amazon kindle books and some into Smashwords.com eBooks.

Some people have complained that the simple guides are too simple.

For their information they are made simple in order to educate the patients.

The later books go into more details of medical conditions.

The first chapter is always from my earlier blogs which unfortunately tends to have typos and spelling mistakes.

Since 2013, I have tried to improve my spelling and writing.

As I tried to bring you the latest information about a condition or illness by reading the latest journals both online and offline, I find that I am learning more and improving on my own medical knowledge in diagnosis and treatment for my patients.

Just by writing all these simple guides I find that I have learned a lot from your reviews (good or bad), criticism and advice.

I am sorry for the repetitions in these simple guides as the second chapters onwards have new information as compared to my first chapter taken from my blog.

I also find repetition definitely help me and maybe some readers to remember the facts in the books more easily.

I apologize if these repetitions are irritating to some readers.

    Chapter 1

    Leaky gut

What is the Leaky Gut Syndrome (Intestine Permeability)?

When it observes these new, larger ones, it treats them as foreign invaders.

Antibodies are then created against previously harmless foods and the immune system becomes progressively overwhelmed with works it should not be doing.

The health of the body becomes harder to maintain as progressive numbers of foods must be prevented for the patient to feel healthy.

While the intestinal wall is becoming more permeable (leakier), vitamin and mineral absorption becomes decreased (not higher, as the patient might thought) because the carrier mechanisms of absorption become injured as part of the process

Many nutrients need to be delivered across the intestinal barrier or it will not be absorbed.

The junctions between cells not only require being intact and tight but the surface area of the small intestine must be bigger for normal nutrient processing to happen.

Progressive irritation and inflammation of the intestinal lining produces an even larger malabsorption by decreasing the overall surface area of the lining.

Even when eating the healthiest of diets, insufficient nutrient absorption may worsen the problem of having to handle all these new foreign invaders.

Leaky gut (hyper-permeable intestine) is often a beginning to other health disorders, especially autoimmune diseases, IBS, and allergies.

Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS) may be a major contributor of disease and dysfunction and may account for a very large component of many chronic complaints.

In LGS, the wall of the small intestine becomes inflamed and irritated allowing metabolic and microbial toxins normally remaining within the small intestines to pass into the colon to enter the blood stream.

In medical terms this is called increased intestinal permeability.

This causes the liver, lymphatic system, immune response and the endocrine system to response protectively rather than induce a healing response

A possible cause of leaky gut is the higher intestinal permeability or intestinal hyper-permeability.

That could happen when tight junctions in the intestines, which regulate what crosses the lining of the small intestine, do not work properly.

That could allow nutrients and other materials to leak into the bloodstream.

The lining of the digestive tract is the same as a net with very small holes in it that only allow specific substances to pass through.

The intestinal lining works as a barrier stopping bigger particles that can damage the system.

When someone has a leaky gut (often known as increased intestinal permeability), the net in the digestive tract becomes injured, which induces even bigger holes to develop in the net, so substances that normally cannot cross over, are now be able to do so.

Some of the substances that can now pass through are proteins like gluten, bad bacteria and poorly digested foods particles.

Poisonous waste can also cross over from the inside of the intestinal wall into the bloodstream producing an immune reaction.

Increased Intestinal Permeability and Intestinal hyper-permeability are medical terms used for the leaky gut.

The knowledge of the increased intestinal permeability condition indicates more and more doctors are realizing leaky gut is an actual disease with real effects.

Many medical researchers have published papers calling for the need to study the intestine as a link to lifestyles, mind and mental disorders, general diseases, and the body as a whole.

    Leaky Gut and the Brain

If a person has ever observed a child with autism feel a mood swing, this can be induced by intestinal permeability.

Gluten-free and casein-free diets have been found effective for many children with autism because these proteins can leak through the gut and then re-circulate and work on the brain the same as an opioid drug.

This is also why leaky gut syndrome has been linked to other psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

So, in many patients, if the doctor can treat the gut, he or she can restore to health the brain

There is also little proof that the treatments claimed to reduce bowel leakiness, such as nutritional supplements and herbal remedies, have any advantageous result for most of the disorders they supposedly assist.

What are the causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome?

    Causes:

In actual fact, leaky gut syndrome (intestinal permeability) is a disorder that happens as a result of intestinal tight junction breakdown.

These tight junctions are the entrance between the intestines and what is permitted to pass into the blood stream.

The tight junctions keep substances out like toxins, microbes and poorly digested food particles.

But the presence of a leaky gut is basically like having the entries open from the
