    We all have a clear picture in our minds of the quintessential vampire. For many people it is the cloaked figure of Count Dracula; pale faced with protruding fangs, venturing out after dusk to suck the blood of unsuspecting maidens in their beds. Indeed it is this nocturnal blood sucking that truly defines what a vampire is to us today, and it is this disturbing activity that has been the cornerstone of books, films and TV for many years.

    The hugely popular Twilight saga continues a long tradition of fictionalized vampire stories going back through Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Hammer House of Horror films, classic movies like Nosferatu and into the nineteenth century books of Bram Stoker (Dracula) and John Polidori (The Vampyre). However dig a little deeper into the history of vampires and you will see that the legends and folklore are much richer and varied than the Hollywood images we are now familiar with would have us believe.

    While the word vampire is a relatively recent one (probably from around the start of the 18th century) the folklore from many different countries has told of supernatural beings who derive their strength from gorging on the blood of innocent people. For centuries blood has been seen as the life force for humans and so it is understandable that ‘undead’ beings such as
