About this ebook

Conversations With A Deaf CatEver wonder what it’s like to be to work in a foreign country, experience new foods and cultures and maybe find a way to help other people while you do it? Most people who become foreign teachers imagine going off to some exotic destination to share their knowledge with people who don’t have the same advantages as them. Sounds like an exciting and noble adventure, right? But what happens if you take the plunge and go off to another country where you don’t even speak the language and EVERYTHING GOES WRONG? How do you deal with getting stuck doing a job you never wanted to do, dealing with deceptive employers, or not getting paid on time, if at all? Conversations With a Deaf Cat explores the true adventures experienced by Michael Durack as a foreign English teacher and/or volunteer in China, Chile and Canada. It also chronicles his experience as an assistant caregiver along with his wife for his mother-in-law’s final months in the Netherlands. In short, it provides an insight into the highs and lows of being a foreign teacher/volunteer/caregiver in a foreign environment that is a must-read for anyone contemplating a similar career or simply interested in knowing what it’s REALLY like.

Author

Michael Durack

Michael Durack is a former corporate manager who suddenly switched careers in his late 50s in order to pursue his dream of providing a beneficial service to society (i.e., teaching) along with the ability to travel the world. When he discovered foreign English teaching, he and his wife disposed of nearly all of their worldly possessions to take on the challenge of immersing themselves in this new profession and traveling to China, Chile and Canada. Along the way, they visited other countries and encountered many memorable characters and adventures in the process. In addition to writing Conversations With a Deaf Cat, (And Other Confessions of a Foreign English Teacher) he has also written The Illegal From Holland, which describes how he inadvertently caused his wife to be deported back to her native Holland and their year-long adventures traveling through Europe while waiting to get her U.S. visa reinstated. In addition to writing, Michael still works periodically in the corporate world to fund his future journeys. He and his wife are also foster hosts for a cat rescue group in California. Although they now reside in the United States, they consider themselves citizens of the world and will eventually depart for more adventures as foreign teachers and/or volunteers.
