About the Author
Lost in Mental Illness
I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in 2007. As I would later find out there were also many more things going on with me than just autism. In fact, the autism would get lost in the big heaping mess of mental illness that I also had but did not know about. The mental illness would eventually take over my life and cause everything about my life to spiral out of control.
The mental illness trumped the autism and made it so I could not even focus on simple tasks. Autism became something that I thought about all the time when I was first diagnosed but by the time I had reached 2011 I was suffering from things that were not at all related to autism. Just because they were not related to autism does not mean that they were not things that I thought or assumed were related to autism.
I had no other diagnosis to go on other than the autism because that is all I had ever been diagnosed with. But people kept telling me autism was not all that bad and things were spiraling out of control for me to reach levels that I had never felt before.
I was in so much mental and emotional pain. I did not know how to wake up each day and function. Autism may make social situations harder or make it more difficult to deal with people but mental illness entirely trumps autism and makes it impossible to deal with people because you are constantly in a state of psychosis or mania.
My mental illness would become so bad over the years that I was not even able to think about autism. I think there were times that I forgot I had it even though I was obsessed with having it and tried to tell everyone in the world that I had autism.
I wanted to have autism because I wanted to be able to learn social skills. I had always known there was something wrong with my social skills. This was all true but maybe it was not all because of the autism. Maybe there were some other issues going on with my mental illness. I do not know but whatever the case may be I was suffering from a great deal of social isolation and pain because I did not know how to socialize and make friends.
People who have mental illness sometimes have issues socializing as well because of everything that is going on within their brain. Socializing is very difficult for me and I have it harder because I have a double diagnosis of autism and schizophrenia.
You can imagine how hard it is to socialize when you have autism. But what people do not think about is how hard it is to socialize with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia can pretty much take over your life and it makes autism
