    Poor Baby Girl poem

Swinging her hips to the melodic sounds of America's beat, she shimmies around in her halter and skirt

Labeled by the boys as a mere freak

As long as she's paid, she could care less what anybody may choose to think

This weekend she'll be able to get those heels she's been shake-dancing for is what crosses her mind as she downs another drink

Stumbling in the door, she falls to the floor and hears a tiny voice ask, Mommy what's wrong?

Poor Lil' girl, stuck in this cruel world where she's forced to call Hell her unfortunate home

In comes a man to help Mommy up as she drunkenly giggles at her baby girl

Go back to your room, is all she can say as the stranger salaciously fondles her pearls

Behind a closed door, baby girl cries, realizing that every night is destined to be the same

Screams come from next door as baby girl prays that one day her mother would change

The next morning, police woke that child to an alarming truth

Her mother had been strangled to death and all they had was the perpetrators shoe

Growing through the pain of loss and misery, baby girl seemed to have found her way

The only path in which she was ever taught to travel which led to her mother’s grave...

    Poor Baby Girl

    Chapter 1: Reflections

Yasmine stood in the mirror glancing at the reflection of a broken woman. A woman who had seen it all in such a short period of a youthful existence of pain. With her mascara smeared and running down her wet cheeks, the twenty-six year old expressed the anguish consuming her through tears.

Disgusted at the sight of herself, she turned to the only friend she had left in the world. That white girl was her friend, because no matter what, she was always there. Non-judgmental, that white girl was simply there as a constant upper and motivational spirit. Her best friend, that white girl, was the little powdery flakes of cocaine, which she dumped onto the shabby desk in front of her.

With her hand trembling, Yasmine pulled out a debit card, which was as useless to her as a plastic cassette tape. She was out of money, out of hope, and running out of time. Taking the card, she quickly, yet carefully, separated the cocaine into lengthy lines.

Hearing the thunderous knocks at the door grow louder, she blocked out the men’s voices as they ordered her to come out. Rolling up a dollar bill that she found in the corner of the room, she placed it to her nose and bowed her head. In one swift motion, she tossed her head back and looked back into the mirror.

Looking at a lost soul, the drug-induced state she was slipping into, took her mind to the very beginning...

Yaz! You get in here right this very second, her mother ordered. In haste, the seventeen-year-old rushed to see what her mother was upset about. Yes ma'am? she questioned.

With fury in her eyes, her mother snatched her by the arm and began to speak. Don't you dare yes ma'am me, like you are innocent! Where did you get these garments?

Yasmine’s eyes moved from her mother to her bed. All of her clothes were sprawled out, and she knew that her mom was about to let her have it.
