North-Western Province a Showcase of Poverty in the Midst of Abundance

About this ebook
North Western Province has a population of 727,044 and is the sixth poorest province in the country with 67% of the population living in poverty.
Yet, North Western Province is blessed with a lot of minerals, like copper, gold, emeralds, uranium, oil, diamonds and other semi-precious stones. Massive mining activities are taking place in the province and are contributing massively to the nation’s wealth. Solwezi, which is the provincial headquarters, is a fast-growing town with mining activities expanding rapidly in the area.
However, sadly, despite the mineral wealth of this province it remains poor and underdeveloped to date. Most of the people are still very poor and living under deplorable conditions as they have nothing to show for their province’s supposed abundant wealth.
A visit to this province will leave one in tears as one is greeted by big unplanned shanty compounds with no proper drainage and muddy roads. One wonders why the area has not developed into a modern Dubai with state of the art structures and tarred roads that reflect its abundance of wealth in terms of mineral resources.
This is a sad state of affairs for the province and a showcase of poverty in the midst of abundance. This poverty and underdevelopment should not be allowed to continue. Every well meaning person should learn variable lessons from this book and push for poverty alleviation in their respective areas and ensure development comes to its citizens no matter the cost. Stand up and be counted as a world changer.

Dedication
I dedicate this book to all North-Westerners and those who feel compelled to help bring about economic and social development here in Zambia and the rest of the world.
It is possible and can be done! Just stand up and be counted.
It is a noble cause. Do not be left out!
Acknowledgements
First of all, I thank God the Father, the only true God, Jesus Christ my saviour and the Holy Spirit, the Director of my inspiration, for giving me the wisdom and the courage to put this book together; without Him, I know it wouldn’t have been possible.
My acknowledgement to Christine, my beloved wife, for her unfailing support and encouragement and to my three beautiful daughters, Kapolo, Kawisha and Katome, for inspiring me to leave a legacy for their generation.
May this book steer you to fight for your inheritance like the daughters of Zelophehad. (Numbers 27:1-8)It is my sincere hope that you will demonstrate a lot of faith in your lives and help to establish the rights of women in our Nation.
I am indebted to my brother, His Royal Highness, Chief Mumena, who, at the right time, contributed towards the thoughts and ideas that I have expressed in this book.
I appreciate the contribution, in one way or another, of all the people to whom I spoke, for their invaluable support and Godly efforts, which provided the basic motivation for this work. They include: Pastor Mwilu, Chipawa, Nkwapu, Kalusa of Caritas Solwezi, Mukumbi Kafuta, Hon. Lucas Chikoti and the Council of Elders for North Western Province, The Post
newspaper and other sources of information.
Thank you all and may God bless you.
Preface
I cannot stand to see my Province, which is endowed with immense wealth, wallow in abject poverty and under-development.
It is almost unnecessary to put down in writing the challenges facing the North-Western Province of Zambia. They are so eloquently portrayed in the inhabitants’ daily grind of life, the plethora of audio/visual and print media about this emerging copperbelt.
A lot has been written, researches have been carried out, opinion pieces have been recorded, and politicians have used its woes as their campaign theme. It seems that everyone knows or hears about the challenges they are facing, and the deplorable conditions in which the people are living in the North-Western Province. Therefore, I shall not devote a large portion of this publication to stating the obvious.
Nevertheless, for the sake of posterity, the realities of the territory ought to be recorded. When we do begin to develop the territory, future generations will have a point of reference as to what the North-western Province was like in 2016. It will help them measure how far they will have moved in development, hence the importance of documenting our history.
We do not stop there, but examine where we are now at the time of this book’s publication, and the way forward - in terms of ideas and suggestions made herein - so as to provide food for thought to the reader. This is meant to be a thought-provoking publication, written in a very simple way, in order to reach a greater scope of readers - from the President reading it in his well-lit State House, to the peasant reading it beside the fire-hearth in his little cottage.
I have written this book, in the first place, purely because I love my country, Zambia. Secondly, I am a very proud North-Westerner, who wants to see development attained in every part of our country, especially the North-Western Province.
It is so shameful to see such infrastructural underdevelopment and high poverty levels in an area that is endowed with immense wealth. It is my intention that the reader will, indeed, learn valuable lessons from this
