    About the Author

    A Dream Dashed

After getting all situated in my new apartment down in Bloomington just off of the campus of Indiana University and coming home to spend the last weekend in which I thought I’d be in Huntington for an extremely long time. It was time for me to head back down to Bloomington on Sunday, August 22nd, 2004. Classes were slated to begin on Monday, August 23rd, 2004. I remember being extremely excited but very anxious and nervous. Indiana University was a huge place and certainly I had have many outstanding opportunities to develop friendships with not only guys but girls as well.

I couldn’t wait to get down there and start playing my trombone with all of these amazing other talented musicians. This was my dream. This was my dream being fulfilled and coming true. I couldn’t have asked for anything better than this musically. Socially I was still looking for improvements in relationships with peers and I thought that IU was the place in which this was going to happen for me.

I would get into Bloomington at around 7:00 pm on that Sunday evening. I didn’t have much to do that Sunday evening after getting there except for relax and get used to my new place. I had a really great apartment thanks to my grandparents and I had imagined staying there all summer long and taking some summer classes.

As I came into town and began to see the beautiful scenery and realize that this situation was actually real and I was not dreaming it up, I began to think about the next few years of my life. I imagined myself making many amazing friends and meeting a woman of my dreams. Graduating with a bachelor’s in trombone performance, landing a professional gig, getting married, and having children. I had my life all planned out as to what I wanted to happen. I went to bed that evening feeling the best I’d felt about myself in a really long time.

For the first time in a long time I was thinking positive and was motivated to get up in the morning and begin my day. I thought that this was going to be perfect and I was going to be okay. I went to bed that evening and had a difficult time falling to sleep due to the fact that I was so anxious, excited, nervous, and a little scared all at once. I was in a new place, with new surroundings, and new people but I knew that this opportunity had to be better than being in Huntington, Indiana where peers were always mean to me and no one wanted to be my friend.

    The First Day of Classes

After spending the night in my brand new apartment it was time for me to get up. I had a music theory class at 8:00 AM and I would have about a half hour to
