About this ebook
"Iglesias experiments with form while showcasing the philosophical and metaphorical possibilities of poetry in this winner of the 2016 National Poetry Series Paz Prize for Poetry. Faultlessly translated by Aparicio, the individual pieces in this book-length sequence of Petrarchan sonnets are each foregrounded by brief meditations, which often read as a commentary on the work's own movement through literary tradition...The experiment in form is a philosophical argument that poetry can contribute to what have traditionally been envisioned as purely scholarly conversations. Iglesias offers a vision of the subject as divided while showcasing the beauty inherent in this fracturing; the fragment is revealed as 'the key that will open the doors.'"
--Publishers Weekly
"Readers of this book, whether in Spanish, English, or both, can find something special in these snapshots of life's random moments...Hearing from a Latina woman that is unapologetically authentic and funny provides a much-needed healthy representation of our culture that helps to dispel the misconceptions. We are not criminals or bad hombres, we are lovers and dreamers and complex human beings, in Miami, and beyond."
--White Wall Review
"Miami Century Fox is Legna Rodríguez Iglesias's English debut, but by no means is she an emerging poet. Here's a voice that's seasoned and fierce, tender and sharp as a blade. I promise, dear readers, that you will not encounter another book quite like this, nor another poet quite like Legna Rodríguez Iglesias, ever again."
--Achy Obejas, from the introduction
"This smart, delightful, and seductive dual-language (Spanish and English) collection by the 2017 winner of the Paz Prize for Poetry is a loving and sly portrait of Miami and the immigrant experience in the 21st century."
--Publishers Weekly, included in Fall 2017 Adult Announcements, Poetry
A bilingual--English and Spanish--collection by the 2017 winner of the Paz Prize for Poetry, Miami Century Fox is a delightful, seductive read. Sonnets? Rhyme and meter? Yes, along with a delicious serving of irony and wit. This is one very smart collection of poems--a loving and sly portrait of Miami and the immigrant experience in the twenty-first century.
Translated by Eduardo Aparicio.
The Paz Prize for Poetry is presented by The National Poetry Series and The Center for Writing and Literature at Miami Dade College and is awarded biennially. Named in the spirit of the late Novel Prize--winning poet Octavio Paz, it honors a previously unpublished book of poetry written originally in Spanish by an American resident.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Enojoyed the bilingual aspect of this edition. As a language student, I enjoy the challenge of experiencing poetry in the original and translation. The writer compelled my interest with their complex style.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5An accessible and original poetry collection with sabor.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I received this as part of librarything's early review program. I either read the description wrong, or, more likely, messed up and clicked next to the wrong book, and I am utterly unqualified to write a review of poetry. I did read the book; even if I inadvertently signed up to review it, I DID sign up to review it, but... It is just the kind of poetry I least understand. There's stories here which I suspect are really interesting stories. I wish they were short stories instead of poetry. But that's ME, and has nothing to do with the poet, who I suspect is quite good. Good enough, in fact, to break through my lack of interest in poetry and make me interested in the stories. So.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Bilingual editions of poetry translated from languages I have some familiarity with always fascinate me. They teach me so much about what I don't know. If I were to sit down with this collection of poems, my minimal knowledge of Spanish and a good dictionary or two I could probably decipher some meaning of the text but the result would hardly be poetic and certainly not fifty-one Petarchan sonnets. I would totally miss the point and give up early on. A collection to make one appreciate the Cuban-American experience, poetry, and the art of fine translation.Free review copy from publisher through LibraryThing giveaway.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Having the translated versions along with the Spanish provided an opportunity to enjoy the poetic rhythm of these poems.I read them more than once to appreciate the imagery and for understanding. While I did not always understand the author's intentions in some of the poems, I believe that the reader brings her own experience to poetry. The notes at the beginning of each poem provided starting points. I was happy to receive this collection from Early Reviewers.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I keep reading Miami Century Fox because each time I get more out of it. The epigraphs and poems are fun and witty, lyrical and layered. They tell a modern story in a very old form, and they give me the opportunity to imagine in a most satisfying way. I love this book!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Everyone should know I am not a natural lover of poetry. I find it too often to be beyond my comprehension. However, lately I find myself reading more and more poetry while enjoying it more than I could ever have imagined just a few years ago. I have truly enjoyed reading this collection. I read one or two poems at a time, then just walked away, allowing myself time to reflect on and interpret each piece. The author has some wonderful thoughts and insights regarding the immigrant experience in our present country. I am looking forward to following her career and reading more of her work.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I received this book for free through LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers. To be honest, I didn’t “get” a lot of these poems. Maybe if I knew both Spanish and English (this is a bilingual book that has the same poems in both languages) I would understand them better. However, I still did like some of them and it was interesting to read a book of sonnets only. But ultimately, I liked the epigraphs more than the poems themselves.
