About this ebook

Mayme Galton has always felt a little like a fish out of water, not truly fitting in amongst the high society set her Uncle has tried to get her to enter into, nor being allowed to spend much time in Faith Creek where she would have been welcomed with open arms. Passionate and generous, she has spent much of her life trying to please everyone - including the parents who abandoned her. She wants her life to change and is prepared to take risks to make that happen, but will she ever find the love she craves, and deserves?

Daniel Harris has devoted his life to God, serving others as a missionary, yet longs to have a family and a place to call home. Always prepared to go where he is directed, and do whatever others deem to be best, he begins to realise that he has no control over his own life. Love can change a man, of course, can make him act in crazy ways - but will it be enough to make him forgive himself for things that happened in his past?

    Chapter One

D on’t pull it too tight , Mayme said to the maid, bracing herself against the bedpost.

Yes, Miss Mayme, Betty said, gritting her teeth and yanking hard on the laces of the corset, utterly ignoring Mayme’s pleas. Mayme gasped.

I do wonder why women put themselves through such agonies, Mayme said, breathlessly.

To create a waist a man can span with his hands, Betty said, with a grin, as she tied the laces tightly then tucked them in carefully. You shall be the very belle of the ball.

I shall pass out before I even get there, Mayme said, pouting a little. I am sure that I look quite well enough without this torture. Let the stays out a little Betty, or you shall have nobody to care for but Uncle Leonard.

Betty dutifully released the laces just enough so Mayme could catch her breath, then brought her gown over from the armoire. Mayme sighed; the red velvet dress was indeed beautiful. Betty helped her to pull it over her head, and began the arduous task of buttoning the pearly buttons that ran up the back of it. Mayme smoothed her hands over the bodice, and down over the full skirt. She stood patiently as Betty fiddled with the skirts, adjusted and patted almost every inch of her then stood back to admire her creation. Miss Mayme, you look lovely, the maid said, finally satisfied. "I have made sure you have your smelling salts in your reticule.

I should hope so, too, Mayme said. If I manage not to faint from the combination of the weight of this lovely gown, and the tightness of my corsets, it will be a miracle - even with your kind, though meager adjustment!

Miss Mayme, your Mama would never forgive me if I let you attend such an event not looking your best. She may not be here in Texas right now, but I know she would want me to make sure you look your best.

You are right, of course. Mama would be apoplectic if she heard from her horrible friends that I looked anything other than perfect. Why she cannot just let me be, I do not know. She has barely noticed me for much of my life, but now it is time for me to be wed, she seems determined to meddle in every aspect of it, Mayme said bitterly. She grimaced at the very thought of having to try and capture the attentions of a young man of fortune. She had watched so many of her friends become simpering and doting fools, doing everything they could to snare an eligible man. She did not want to be like them, and nor did she want a life like her Mama’s, either.

Papa was a talented opera singer, and Mama a devoted wife who followed wherever he performed. Mama could not bear to be parted from him. Mayme often wondered if it was less to do with devotion, and far more to do with her Mama’s insecurities that Papa might stray if she were not there, in his presence at all times. Papa was surrounded by adoring fans, and the opera world was infamous for its liaisons. Papa had insisted that the stage, and his nomadic life were not suitable for a child, and Mama believed a child needed the stability of a permanent home, so Mayme had been left with Papa’s brother Leonard, in his comfortable home just outside of Faith Creek.

Uncle Leonard was an affirmed bachelor, and had not been entirely welcoming of his young niece, though being financially comfortable he had ensured that she had every material possession that she might need. Mayme had been brought up by a series of nannies and governesses whilst her parents traveled the length and breadth of the country. And so, she had experienced the very best education a young woman might receive, knew the role she should play in Society, and yet had very little idea of love or affection. It had made her strangely determined to marry only if she could find a man to truly care for her and cherish her.

Mayme’s most treasured possessions were the collection of letters that detailed her parents’ travels, the marks on each envelope showing the many places they had visited. Mayme longed to see the world that Mama and Papa had described in these missives. She kept them in a box that Uncle Leonard had carved for her, and given her as a gift one Christmas when she was a girl. She cherished it, as he must have spent such a lot of time making it, knowing that her Mama and Papa would not be returning to Faith Creek for Christmas that year. It was the only tangible sign she had ever received that Uncle Leonard cared for her, in his own way. She stroked the lid, letting her fingers linger over the carefully carved rabbits and foliage that made up the design, as she picked up her reticule and made her way downstairs.

Well, I shall be the envy of every man in the State, Uncle Leonard chuckled, offering her his arm as she reached his side. He was dressed in his military uniform, and looked tall and proud. As an old soldier, he looked forward to these occasions when he could be amongst men that were more like him, colleagues he had once served with. The formality of it all suited him.

I doubt that, Mayme said. But it is kind of you to say so. She reached up to press a kiss to his wrinkled cheek. He flushed, and looked at her awkwardly.

The carriage is waiting, he said hurriedly.

Then we should be on our way, Mayme said, knowing he would probably never know how much he meant to her, and how grateful she was to him for having taken her in – even though he had not wanted to.

The early evening sunshine made a welcome change from the storms that had been battering Faith Creek for the past few weeks. The road was a little rutted and muddy, but Uncle Leonard drove carefully and they made good time. A young man was lighting lanterns along the track up to the fort as they arrived. He gave Uncle Leonard a salute as the carriage
