    I don’t know why girls have to wait so long in line for a chance to play Chiney Skip, I complained, as I waited fifth in line to play the most popular game in the schoolyard during recess. 

    I watched as Sabrina skillfully jumped up and down in a pattern on the long elastic band, stretched out like a rectangle. Two girls stood about five feet apart holding the elastic band, first, behind their ankles, then their knees, then their thighs, and then up to their waist. Some brave girls even attempted to jump at heights of the armpits and the neck, but I’ve never seen anyone succeed at those heights. Someone always walked away with a skinned knee or elbow, and sometimes even with a busted lip.

    Sabrina was still jumping when the elastic band was up to the thighs. She was carefully stepping on the elastic band without getting out by tripping or falling. There were so many bigger and more skilled girls in the line, that I was certain I would not get to play by the time the bell rang to end recess.

    I left the Chiney Skip line and walked to another area in the schoolyard where some girls were playing Ticky Tock. I watched Ruth scoop up a handful of twelve small stones from the ground, throw them up in the air, and caught as many as she could on the back of her hand. She then
