About this ebook

‘A historically astute, skilfully developed crime drama.’ Kirkus Reviews

When a brilliant emigré scientist is killed by a hit-and-run driver and the body of a female employee of the American Embassy is washed up in the Thames, DCI Frank Merlin and his team investigate.

Merlin's investigations soon ruffle feathers at the Foreign Office as the American ambassador, Joseph Kennedy, is a well-known supporter of appeasement, and many powerful and influential Britons favour the pursuit of a negotiated peace settlement with Hitler.

The death of another embassy employee leads Merlin into some of the seedier quarters of wartime London. His investigations are hampered by interfering superiors fearful of their impact on Anglo-American relations. This at a time when, to many, America represents Britain's only hope of salvation.

Capturing the atmosphere of Britain in January 1940 Princes Gate is an enthralling detective novel.

Very enjoyable historical detective novel - good characterisation, easy to visualise the characters and the locations.

A tidy police procedural based in London at the start of World War 2.

The main character Inspector Merlin is very much in the "Foyles War" vein, but with Spanish origins he makes an unusual character.

The author captures well the feel of the period and it appears well researched, but did find some modern words and phrases jarring. For example the police talk of forensics, which sounds too modern a word, but I could well be wrong. Another scene describes the sounds of a police siren across the river, when in 1940s Britain I thought Police cars only had bells? Again not my speciality area.

That being said I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

Two local employees of the U S embassy in London are murdered in separate incidents and police DCI Merlin is ordered to tread lightly. It is early 1940, Hitler is on the move though the London Blitz has not started yet. The Brits want U S support, but Ambassador Joseph Kennedy favors appeasement with Hitler. Negotiations between the US and England are sensitive and Merlin's bosses don't want him offending their potential saviors. While the victims held low level positions, they had rubbed elbows and other body parts with highly ranked officials in both the US Embassy and the Brit Foreign Office. Sex and rape seems to be involved and perhaps drugs and blackmail as well. As Merlin attempts to get questions answered, potential witnesses and suspects offer minimal cooperation, sometimes playing the diplomatic immunity card."Princes Gate" is well written, generally fast paced though there a few lags in the story. The characters are well drawn and interesting, and the tension that is slowly building in pre-Blitz London is well described. I will read the next book in the series and hope that it is a bit faster paced and perhaps set in a slightly later and more interesting period of the London WWII years. This is a good start to such a series but in my books it is not close to the excellent series written by John Lawton.

This was a well-written murder mystery set in 1940 London, as the city is preparing for war with Germany. The story had well-developed characters, and as an added bonus, supporting cast includes several real-life characters that played a major role in the lead-up to WWII: Ambassador Joseph Kennedy, Sr., who was a leader of the appeasement crowd trying desperately to keep America out of the war, even to the point of working against President Roosevelt.

The story itself was very good, a basic police-procedural with two murders and a hit-and-run killing. Of course, it's a tangled web the police have to navigate to get to the answers. Not going to spoil anything here, go read the book!

Looking forward to the next in the Frank Merlin series, Stalin's Gold.

January 1940 London and D.C.I. Frank Merlin and his team have several cases to investigate. Detective Johnson is charge of an hit and run of a scientist, while Merlin and D.S. Sam Bridges are making inquiries concerning the body of a female employee of the American Embassy which has been discovered in the River Thames.
I enjoyed this mystery set in wartime London and liked the main characters. A good solid start to this series.
