Stan Ledford

High School Sweethearts from Arkoma OK, Stan (Preach) and (Momma) Alice Ledford married in 1977, and two years later in 1979, they began their journey into their ministry. In 1986, with their 3-year-old son Kramer, they were elected to their first Pastorate. Pastor Ledford recalls, “Those church members voted us in 100%. They needed to have their head examined all 8 of them.” That was just the beginning. Since then, the Ledford’s ministry has developed and expanded in many different ways. Not only have they pastored ever since that November in 1986, but in 1994 they ventured into their first journey behind bars, beginning a jail and prison ministry that continues to grow even to this day. In 2010, a new door opened that allowed them to start ministering to those with addiction problems. This is when they developed Drug aNd Alcohol Rehab or DNA. DNA has seen several set free from their addiction. It was through their ministry with DNA in county jails in Texas, that they started developing yet a new ministry centering on abused women. You Are a Picker was a catch phrase Pastor Ledford began using when speaking to teen girls for years. His goal was to make them understand just how valuable they were. When speaking in jails the Ledford’s began noticing how this phrase was catching on with the female inmates. Every few weeks when some new inmates would cycle through the ladies would say to Pastor Ledford (Preach) “Hey Preach so-in-so has not heard your picker story tell her your picker story.”  The idea for this book, “You Are a Picker,” was born behind bars in Texas. Our prayer is that as you read this short book you will realize NO MATTER WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN THROUGH, YOU ARE A PICKER. May God bless and keep you.

You are a Picker - Stan Ledford

    Dedication

IT MAY SEEM ODD TO some that I am dedicating a book written for women to my son Kramer, daughter in law Lauren, and grandson Eleazar Ledford.

Kramer and Lauren have been such a joy to me and Momma. Their support in our ministry has been an essential part of getting us where we are today. Whether it is a message idea, an idea for a book, or just bouncing ideas off each other, they have caused me to grow in Christ. The thing that has blessed me the most about my son is his role as a dad. Watching him and Lauren raise my grandson blows me away at just how great a job they are doing. (Tanks) Kramer.

May the Lord bless you and protect you.  May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace. ~ Numbers 6:24-26 NLT

    Chapter 1

    You are a Picker

I HAVE BEEN TELLING young ladies for decades, You are a Picker.

What I mean by that can best be explained by a visit to the grocery store. When you visit the grocery store and start down the produce aisle, a bunch of bananas does not say, You are taking me home. The tomatoes do not tell you, Put me in the basket. Why? Because you are the Picker.

You decide which bananas or tomatoes are put in your basket. You chose based on looks, how they felt, how they smelt, or whatever other test you chose to give them. You chose them. You get to pick which one becomes a part of your life.

You are buying them with money you earned. It took blood, sweat, and tears to earn that money. You had to get up early, or go to bed late. It took your energy, your effort, to earn that money. You worked even when you did not feel well or were exhausted. The money used to purchase what you put in your basket represents a part of your life.

So, YES, you have the right to choose which bananas you buy.

If you take time and effort to choose bananas, then why would you not put as much effort into choosing the people who you allow to become a part of your life? Is it because you don’t understand the concept that it is YOU who gets to do the picking?

Many women have the idea that they are the bananas or the tomatoes. These women feel they are the ones who are laying on the produce counter waiting for someone to come along and pick them. These women feel that because of their past, because of their family status, or whatever reason, they don’t have the right or privilege to be a Picker. So, these ladies just lay on the counter waiting on someone to come by and inspect them to see if they are worthy to take them.
