55 Smart Apps to Level up Your Brain - I. C. Robledo
Introducing Smart Apps
Who is this Book for?
If you have ever wanted to give your brain a work out, this book will help you along that path. Here you will find 55 unique apps to help you reach your brain’s true potential. Many people are interested in working out their bodies so they can be healthy and look their best. Unfortunately, not quite as many people seem concerned about keeping the brain healthy and working at its optimum capacity. Obviously, if you are reading this, you are interested in this, which is a great first step.
This book is also for those who value their own time and who don’t want to spend hours and hours trying out an overabundance of apps to see which ones are any good. I’ve already done that for you, so you don’t need to. If you’ve found yourself frustrated in the past, taking time to try out apps or products only to realize that it wasn’t really what you wanted, or it wasn’t as good as you expected, then you know it can be a pain. Rest assured that I’ve personally tested and used every app that I will mention. I’ve used a great deal more apps than what made it into this book, and I selected the best free apps I could find that would be beneficial for your brain. You can consider this as your personal report on the best cognitive and mind building apps available at this time. In my opinion, having used tons of intellectual apps, these are the most useful ones that a person should use if they want to keep their brain working at its peak.
Ultimately, this will be a fantastic resource for anyone who wishes to further develop their intellectual and mental abilities, and who realizes just how helpful apps can be for that goal. This book is all about using apps to further develop our minds, so you will want to have a device that uses apps, such as a smart phone or tablet. Even if you aren’t aware of just how beneficial apps may be to working out your brain, I will cover that in more detail after this next section.
What Devices or Platforms Will these Apps Work on?
I’m sure you would like to know if the apps mentioned in this book will work for your particular devices. To make this as clear as possible I’ll simply list off the devices and how many apps are in this book for each one.
iPhone & iPad (& iPod Touch): 53 apps
Google Play (Android): 50 apps
Kindle Fire: 31 apps
Web Browser (Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.): 24 apps
Windows Phone: 17 apps
Apple Watch: 5 apps
If you own an iPhone, iPad, or use Google Play, you should get the most value from this book. If you have a Kindle Fire or Windows Phone and you would like to use apps on your web browser as well, then you could get a good value from the book too. However, if you only own a Kindle Fire or Windows Phone and you’re not interested in web browser apps, then you’ll have to decide for yourself if you think you’ll get enough value from this book. Of course, if you’re only interested in Apple Watch apps, this book will be of limited value with such a small number available at this time. Ultimately, the devices and apps are listed above so you can decide if this will be a useful resource for you.
Why are Apps such a Great Tool for Intellectual Growth?
If you’re already familiar with using many apps, then you already know this: apps are super convenient. Most of the time if they’re made well, they’re very easy to use. The devices that you use your apps on are often very portable and they allow you to use your apps anywhere. More and more places offer free internet (Wi-Fi), meaning you’ll often have access to your apps at any time or place. If you’re not using apps (and not just brainy ones) you are missing out on an entire world of entertainment, convenience, and efficiency.
Also, apps provide interactive and adaptive systems that we don’t often find elsewhere. Many educational systems and tools have historically been a one size fits all
proposition, but with apps and other modern technology, often the app itself will adapt and change depending on your needs. In the case of brain training apps, for example, the better you perform the more challenging the tasks tend to get. The worse you perform, the easier they will become so that you can have time to master the basics. This allows you to stay engaged and continue exercising your brain without unnecessary frustration.
It’s tempting to speak about apps as if they’re all the same thing. But there are limitless possibilities with each app. Every day that passes by, there is an opportunity for someone to design an extraordinary app that surprises everyone with its ingenuity. Some of those apps may already exist, and you simply aren’t aware of them. Some of them may even be in this book. As I was testing apps in preparation to write this book, I was surprised at the level of depth that some of these app creators went to. This limitless factor that apps have is actually just what our brains need. We need apps that surprise us with new things for us to learn, with new puzzles to solve and better user interfaces, and that are adaptive to our needs. Thankfully, this appears to be the direction that apps have gone in, and that they will likely continue to move in.
How Did I Come up with this List of Apps?
I’ve been interested in apps, especially apps that can be used for intellectual growth, for many years. I’ve tried many of them through time, and in writing this book I’ve tried out many new apps as well. You would be hard pressed to find someone who has used more intellectual apps, or who knows any more about them than me. Of course, this list is based on my experience in searching for and using all kinds of smart apps.
My motivation in making this list was to take a broad perspective in searching for the most intellectually stimulating apps. Many times when people think of intellectual apps, they may think about brain training, such as apps that help you train your focus, math skills, vocabulary, and that sort of thing. Of course these apps are included here, but if we want to
