All Renee has to do is to prove which one of them killed Jason Powers, before Chief Tollerton decides Renee and Officer Briceson are out of time and demand they arrest Marlene Powers for murder. Dear Readers,

I don't always come up with the characters and stories by myself. I love it when family and friends think of a story they would like me to write.

Cousin Sandy was the one who furnished me some Dumb Blonde jokes that lead me to build this case for Detective Renee Brown. So thanks Sandy for giving me the ideas.

I always appreciate all the suggestions and try to follow up on as many as I can.

Enjoy this fourth book in the Renee Brown Mystery series.

    Prologue

Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. That was the way I felt for a few weeks as I tried to sort out my feelings.

The whole mess that made me wonder if I shouldn't talk to a shrink began with what I thought was going to be a simple friendship. I don't know whether simple is the right choice of words for the friendship part, but it diffidently described my new friend's IQ.

I know why I took it upon myself to befriend blonde, daffy Marlene Powers. I saw the first time I met her that she needed a friend because of her overbearing husband.

I could have ignored how Jason Powers treated his wife and minded my own business like I usually do. Now I wish I had, but hindsight is always twenty-twenty. It goes against my nature to make friends easily with other women.

At the time, I ask myself why bother with Marlene Powers? After all, Marlene made the decision to marry Jason Powers. She was stuck with her poor bargain and found out the hard way money can't buy happiness. My inner self answered back, someone needs to help the poor woman learn to stand up to her verbally abusive husband. In this world, there are watchers and there are doers. I guess I just happen to be a doer.

Frankly, I felt sorry for Marlene, and that was my first mistake where she was concerned. At the end of the mess I got myself in when push came to shove, I debated resigning my job on the Wedgewood Police force. You got to know I love my job. Doesn't that tell you just how mixed up I was?

Still yet today when I hear the name Marlene Powers my temper heats up. At the time, Chief Tollerton told me I'd lost my objectivity about the Powers case and took me off of it.

Oh well, you read about the mess I got myself into and see what you think. I hate to admit it, but the chief might have been right about me this one time.

    Chapter 1

On a Wednesday morning in May, Renee Brown had finished breakfast and just got back in her car when her cell phone played a muffled version of the Sex and The City theme. Renee had tossed the phone in the glove-box before she went into the Wagon Wheel Cafe for breakfast. She considered it an out of sight out of mind type of diversion.

She was on her way to work so she fully expected this call was work related. Her dark eyes picked up with a glance in the rear-view mirror that her dark brown hair was in place. She wore little makeup so she found it easier to get ready for work in the morning. In other words, she was as ready to start her work day as she was going to get.

As she reached for the phone with one hand, she turned on her police radio with the other to see if there was any interesting activity. The day dispatcher, Lois Mercky, might be trying to call her with the first case of the day.

Renee pressed the on button, put the phone on speaker and laid it in the passenger seat. Hello, Detective Brown here.

What she heard was Ross Klink, the Pike County Coroner's deep voice. Caught you before you got in the middle of something I hope.

That's my boyfriend with the good looks, salt and pepper hair and sexy voice. Always comes right to his point and never a good morning first. You did indeed. I just finished breakfast and am pulling out of the Wagon Wheel Cafe parking lot. What's up?

I wanted to see if you could go with me to the country club next Saturday evening? The tone of his voice was tentative.

Sure, I guess so. Renee had a funny feeling this wasn't any old date. Doc didn't take her to the country club very often, and he sounded nervous about asking her this time.

Good! This happens to be for my high school reunion, and I didn't want to go alone, he said candidly.

Renee groaned. Ross, those invitations usually go out a month or so a head of time. You're asking me at the last minute. How come?

Ross answered truthfully, I knew you might be reluctant to go with me so I figured on going alone. The more I thought about it I finally concluded I wanted company at this event.

If you're not too keen on going why go? Renee asked bluntly.

Simple. I'm not thrilled about going, but still I'm curious about what has happened to my former classmates since ten years ago. If I get bored at least I have you to talk to, Ross said.

Renee heard humor in his voice. Thanks a lot. Something still wasn't right. Wait a minute. Your class doesn't meet every five years? Mine does.

They do, but I missed the last reunion. I was working long hours five years ago. Besides, I didn't know you back then to ask, Ross excused.

All right, I'll go. Just remember you owe me big time, Renee declared.

Thanks, I'll pick you up about five. We're supposed to be at the country club in time for the social hour before the meal, Ross explained.

Got ya. I just pulled in to the station parking lot. Best get to work. Have a good day, Doc.

    You too.

The next few days dragged by. Renee dreaded attending Ross's high school reunion more with each passing day. Saturday evening, Ross came to the door with a bouquet of red roses sprouting out of his hand.

How nice, Renee said coolly. You didn't have to do this. Roses are expensive, and I said I'd go.

Yeah, I had to do it. You said I owed you,
