Bird Diseases - Andrea Els
Crop Canker
Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis or commonly known as Crop Canker is not the same as Cancer in humans or other mammals. This is causes by a parasite and is normally only found in a certain area of the bird. It is also contagious and can spread from one bird to another. Normally humans are not effected by Trichomoniasis but it is always recommended to treat the infected animal with care and to take the necessary precautions.
Cause:
Trichomoniasis is caused by a protozoan called Trichomonas Gallinae
Bird species that are most likely to contact Trichomoniasis are as follow: Pigeons, Doves, Poultry, Raptors and Finches, other species might also become infected.
Trichomonas Gallinae are normally found in the oral/Nasal cavity, Respiratory tract or at the end of the digestive tract. Trichomonads multiply quickly through multiplying by single division. This means that they die quickly once passed out by the host.
Contraction:
The parasite spread from bird to bird:
● Babies can get infected if their parents are infected by the parasite and are feeding them.
● Birds can get infected by drinking the water that has been infected with this parasite. This occur when infected birds share the same water supply as healthy birds.
● Birds can also become infected by ingesting grain that was regurgitated by infected
