There are too many people who have impacted my life and this book to possibly mention. For practical purposes, I will mention the most obvious ones. My deepest gratitude to:
Behnaz Khodayari, my loving, cherished wife. Her unwavering belief, encouragement, love, trust, and faith in me are a critical part of this work and my life.
My parents, Lou and May Jean Wolff, for creating a family culture that encouraged me to be true to who I am and not to give in to the expectations of our mainstream culture.
Cara Stein for editing, cover design, collaborative advice, encouragement, and publishing.
Jack DeLamater for many years as a business partner and friend, providing support, encouragement, trust and patience, along with editorial comments and suggestions for this book.
Neel Majumdar for suggesting that I write this book. Without his suggestion, it probably would have sat in my list of someday I’m going to…
Everyone who provided editorial comments and suggestions (in no particular order): Joe Melnick, Danny Timblin, Lynn Taylor, Cynthia Spradlin, Daryl Conner, Keith Wolff. Their feedback and suggestions were instrumental in this effort, and I am grateful.
Preface
We’re all taught the correct way to manage organizations and work with other people. The only problem is that the way we’ve been taught often doesn’t work very well.
We’ve all learned the same tools, techniques and strategies—not just in school, but also in our culture at large. We’ve seen them applied across organizations, in all kinds of situations. The people who lead businesses and governments use them. It’s the same everywhere, and most people seem to agree that these methods are correct. I know I did.
For much of the first 57 years of my life, I was committed to a hard-headed, self-righteous
approach—just like I saw in successful people everywhere I looked. I learned it well and applied it diligently. And the more I saw the same approach reflected in leaders and the people around me, the more sure I was of its rightness—and thus, my rightness.
Only one thing troubled me: It did not appear that this way of life was working well for me… or for the organizations I was familiar with. Instead, it created dysfunction, unhappiness, and destructive conflict.
I assumed that these conditions and their consequences were a natural part of life—simply the unalterable reality of human existence. I didn’t know any other way, and it seemed that most people around me didn’t either.
Of course, by believing that this was true, I didn’t challenge my beliefs or look for better options. With that mindset, this reality was locked in
for me and would continue as my reality indefinitely. This is my view of why it is so easy to get stuck in problems and see no way out.
I’ve always been a little envious of people who have had major aha moments
or epiphanies that suddenly shifted their lives. That has definitely not been my personal experience, but I remain hopeful of experiencing one before I die. Instead, I’ve been shaped primarily by my struggles to progress in a manner that’s much slower than what I’ve wanted.
As my process of waking up
has slowly meandered along, I’ve learned that many of the things I believed just aren’t true. They’re simply premises that I accepted from those around me. My beliefs and behavior were almost entirely learned from my cultural conditioning, and I assumed that they were true without giving it much thought. But many of the things
