About this ebook
A woman must be well aware with the functioning of her body as a whole. Even today many women remain ignorant of the reasons for the periodic bodily changes they experience. This is because so often female sexuality is surrounded by concealment and superstitions.
Hence, this book discusses the sensitivity and understanding of the signs of a woman’s body and how it functions. Knowledge of the body rhythms and working of its health is the source of early discovery of any disorder or ill health.
The key to the different developments in males and females can be found in the study of the smallest unit of living beings – the cell. In each cell there are tiny structures called chromosomes. The chromosomes carry genes which encrypt the evidence that controls whether a human organism will be male or female.
Yoga leads to a positive body and health. Start yoga today for your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

1. A woman’s body and constitution
A woman must be well aware with the functioning of her body as a whole, but particularly the reproductive system, because it is the most important characteristic of her biological womanliness. According to yoga, the reproductive system is influenced by Mooladhara Chakra which is the source of primal energy and one of the most important psychic centers. Understanding the importance of the location of Mooladhara is a prerequisite for almost all yogic practices.
It is almost generally regarded that males are stronger and that females are ‘the weaker sex’. This is repeated despite evidence that amongst humans the female is constitutionally stronger than the male. Statistics show that women seem to be capable of enduring greater hardship and strain. It has been said that men are the strong ones but women are the tough ones
.
The Hormonal system
The endocrine system is present along with the nervous system as additional ‘messenger system’ which coordinates the several internal functions. The endocrine system consists of several chemicals called hormones, which are secreted by different ductless glands directly into the bloodstream, then carried to all the other parts of the body. They have a significant effect on physical growth, size and shape, and also regulate a woman’s character, mental powers, attitudes, energy and personality.
These ductless glands are the pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, thymus, adrenal glands and gonads. Almost all are found in pairs so that if one is damaged or diseased, the other can continue to meet the needs of the body. The effort of each gland is closely connected with that of all the others, and the relations of the various hormones are an important characteristic of this system. Therefore, any ailment in even one gland will have significant consequences throughout a woman’s body and on her emotions.
The Pituitary Gland is a small pea-sized gland located at the base of the brain. This is the master gland which controls through specialized hormones, as well as those regulating the female reproductive cycle. It also controls the body’s water and salt balance. This is the gland associated with the periodic fluid retention experienced by many women during the menstrual cycle. It is located in the brainstem at the very topmost point of the spinal cord and is very sensitive to stress in both the nervous and hormonal systems.
The Pineal Gland is responsible for smooth transition between various states of consciousness – from walking to sleeping, sleep to dream, and for psychic activity. This gland has a role to play in physical maturity for both boys and girls, and is related to emotional stability in adults. Deficiency of serotonin, a pineal hormone, is a triggering factor in depression – a problem faced by many women.
The Thyroid Gland regulates metabolism, shapes body growth, and governs the composition of the blood. The thyroid speeds our inner clockwork by activating various organs and systems. It is located in front of the neck. An overactive thyroid causes weight loss, nervousness and irritability. An underactive thyroid may cause weight gain, lethargy and pessimism.
The Parathyroid Glands are very small glands, two on each side of the windpipe. Although encased within the thyroid, they act independently to regulate bone growth and distribution of calcium and phosphorus.
The Thymus Gland is located in the center of the chest and is particularly important in children, helping to regulate the growth pattern. Disturbances of the thymus result in low resistance and poor emotional stamina.
The Adrenal Glands are attached to the top of each kidney. The central part (medulla) produces adrenaline and noradrenaline which affect blood pressure, respiration, oxygen consumption and numerous other aspects of the reflex. Too much of these hormones can lead to high blood pressure and circulatory problems, digestive disorders, and to constant fear and anxiety.
The Pancreas contains the islets of Langerhans which produce digestive juices and hormone insulin which regulates blood sugar. Breakdown of insulin production causes diabetes.
The Gonads are the glands of the reproductive system, the testes and prostate in males, the ovaries in females, producing the hormones necessary for sexual differentiation and maturity. In women the ovaries produce oestrogens and progesterone which moderate the menstrual cycle. Imbalance in these hormones leads to all kinds of reproductive system disorders, to emotional sensitivity, anxiety and depression. In women the production of hormones is regulated by response from several other glands, notably the pituitary which is
