Autism Explained - Sara Elliott Price
Introduction
So your child has autism . For many families this is a devastating diagnosis.
No one wants to be told that their child has autism. However, there is plenty of help out there for families like yours—so don’t despair! This book is a great first step, because we’ll be taking a look at understanding autism in general and then suggesting practical solutions to meet the everyday challenges of life with an autistic child.
Most likely you’ve already got a diagnosis for your child. Or maybe you just suspect something’s wrong because your child isn’t developing in the same way as other children. Maybe you’re waiting for an assessment. Either way, as a parent no doubt you have plenty of questions.
Some questions are general: What should I be doing? How can I get help for my child? How will I be able to cope? Others are more specific. How can I get him to talk to me? Why does he scream when he touches certain things? Why does he go into meltdown mode if I have to pick up groceries on the way home from school?
In this book we’ll be looking at how to understand the reasons for your child’s behavior and practical steps you can take to cope with his disability. We’ll help you as you try to help your child understand the strange world he lives in. And we’ll offer plenty of suggestions to support you both with the challenges of everyday life.

It can impact their behavior, social interactions, learning and communication. A child who gets diagnosed at a young age and starts therapy early has the best chance of going on to develop good social skills. However, some slip through the net and don’t get diagnosed until they’re
