Introduction
Welcome to Contemporary Art 101, where we will focus on the exploration and the progression of contemporary art.
It is undeniable that contemporary art has an unprecedented number of forms, styles, agendas and practices. Many argue that much that is called contemporary art is not art at all. But the definition of the word art has no real boundaries; it simply states that art is The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as a painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
This guide will help you form your own opinions and evaluations of contemporary art and give you a greater understanding of the influences behind it.
Chapter One - What is Contemporary Art?
Contemporary art is the art of today.
The interpretation of exactly when today is can be a difficult one to gauge. But for the majority of art historians, it is accepted to mean from 1960 onwards. This also coincides with the time at which New York took over from Paris as the capital of the art world.
Contemporary art refers to different art forms, including painting, sculpture, photography, installation and performance art and video art. It encompasses a vastly wide range of styles and is almost completely influenced by modern culture.
In English, the words ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’ are one and the same. Sadly, in the eyes of the art world, they describe two different categories, although the two do become a little blended. Modern art is generally associated with art created between 1860 and the 1970s, whereas, contemporary art started in the 1960s and continues to the present day.
