For nearly two years, Darrin has been the sole audio engineer for a local radio show in his home town. The show, Minding My Business, is a show all about helping entrepreneurs succeed in the business of running a business.

As Darrin listened to many of the business leaders who came on the show, eventually meeting them in person, and connecting with them through social media, he began to realize that many of the leaders were coaches, and speakers with powerful, life-changing messages. Many of them had taken to social media to share their message with the world. However, in many cases, Darrin noticed the missing ingredient that could truly unlock the potential of their messages and bring them the revenue they needed to keep changing lives. While their messages were on point, they needed to take their quality to a higher level! The videos they shot had poor audio, lighting, backgrounds, or all of the above. The audio on their CDs, podcasts, and other projects didn’t have that professional “polish” or “sheen” to it. Darrin heard and saw a need.

Darrin began sharing tips with these leaders to help them improve their production quality, even attending conferences, and turning his hotel rooms into makeshift “studios” to record audio professionally for them so they could hear the difference. This effort only had a limited reach and impact though, and Darrin realized this. So he began shooting videos of his own to explain ways the leaders could improve their production quality. These videos covered various topics, mainly having to do with audio. However, through continued conversations and recording sessions with these leaders, Darrin saw an even bigger need. A step-by-step guide to help these coaches take their production quality to the next level! So in order to help more people at once, he drew on his 15+ years experience in the Audio/Visual production world to catalog best practices, tricks & tips, and recommendations on affordable gear into one publication — his first — Set The Tone!

    Albert Einstein said you can't solve a problem with the same level of thinking that it took to create the problem. And for so many speakers and coaches and trainers who do live broadcast, the problem is they’re not making the money that they want to make. What I love about Darrin Thompson is he's come up with a way to figure out how to crack to code and solve that money problem.

    Imagine a diamond in a jewelry store that was just sitting in a box it wasn’t well lit, it wasn’t well displayed. What they know is they will never command top dollar for that diamond!     I’d like to personally thank you for investing your time in learning how to capture your audio/visual content in a professional way…but I can’t because I’m not there in person. So this next sentence is for you…

    By investing in this publication, you’ve invested in yourself, and investing in yourself is ALWAYS a good thing. It really means a lot to me that you’re taking time to learn just some of the basics behind producing better media for those whose lives you hope to change along the way.

    In an audio/visual production environment, one of the things audio engineers do is send a signal out to cameras and other devices to make sure that signal is being received on the other end. This is called sending tone. Do a search on YouTube for a 1 kilohertz sine wave sound, and you’ll hear that familiar sound I’m referring to. In addition to making sure the signal is being received, when audio engineers send tone, it’s a consistent audio source they can use to set levels on the devices receiving the sound. So you could say, that audio engineers set the tone. And much like audio engineers, when you, the motivational coach, host a conference, you too set the tone. When you create audio/visual content for your websites, and social media — you set the tone.

    For all the public speakers who are just getting started, building their brands — ultimately their careers, and who are learning to harness the power of audio/visual technology — I wrote this book to help you set the tone. I want to help you set the tone for how others perceive your brand, and by doing so, increase your exposure, expand your influence, and grow your revenue. What person, in business for themselves today, doesn’t want that?

    But, with so many people playing in the digital space these days, how does one stand out?

    In a word: quality.

    In actions: deliberate.

    With your media: well produced — Tone setting! Know your purpose.

    I am a strong believer that in today’s competitive environment, you have to actively start thinking of the quality of your audio/visual content as part of your brand. I say actively because far too many people treat their content quality as an afterthought. When people overlook the importance of audio/visual quality in their branding they’re overlooking the impression they’re leaving on their audience. If you commit this sin in this digital age, you’ve overlooked your brand. Your tone is out of whack!

    Now some people may be savvy enough to know that they need to look good on video and have decent lighting, and maybe even a nice camera to boot. But even in that camp, while folks concern themselves with how good they look on camera, audio quality is almost never considered,
