    Ben and Bob

This is a story about Ben and Bob. Now Ben and Bob were both…maybe I should start at the beginning. Our story centers around a young four-year-old boy by the name of Christopher. His mother called him Chris. The time is early spring. The winter had been long and cold with a lot of snow. The weather had been warming up and the snow had nearly all melted.

As Chris looked out of the window, he could see the grass. The grass was still brown and had not yet turned green. He hadn’t been outside much during the winter because of the cold and snow.

As Chris stared at the yard, his mother came up to him and said. Chris, how would you like to go outside and play today? The weather is still chilly, but much nicer than it has been. I think you should go outside and play.

At this, Christopher became very excited! He was really ready to go outside and play with his toys again. He couldn’t wait to get outside! Christopher couldn’t even remember most of his toys. It had been so long since he had been outside playing with them. Mother told him she would open the garage door so he could get to his toy box.

Chris’s mom got a coat and cap for him to wear outside. Then out the door he went with a smile on his face from ear to ear. The fresh air smelled so good. The sunshine warmed him to the bone. As Chris rounded the corner of the house, the first thing he spied was his baseball bat lying on the ground. Chris had left his

bat out all winter, but too make things even worse, he left his baseball glove outside too! I sure hope it’s not ruined, he said to himself. Like the baseball bat, it too was all dirty. Chris brought the glove over to the driveway and sat it next to the bat. He could see that he now had some work to do. His toys needed a good cleaning.

Suddenly he saw a yellow object near the back of the garage. As he drew closer, he recognized the object. It was his favorite truck. Looking at it, he now realized he had left his best toy outside under a thick blanket of snow all winter. He knew that he hadn’t taken very good care of his toys last fall. The bright yellow truck was no longer shiny. It was very dull and dirty. Chris could even see some rust around the edges. As bad as he felt, he knew his dad would fix it up and make it look brand new again.

Running to place the truck near the other toys on the cement, he felt a sharp pain in his finger. Looking down he saw some blood on his finger. Dropping the truck, he ran to the back door calling his mother.

    Mommy! My finger! he yelled.

Hearing Chris yell, she ran to the back door to see what had happened. As she opened the back door she could see Chris with tears running down his cheeks. He was holding his finger. Picking her son up, she placed him on the kitchen counter and examined his hand. Washing the dirt from his finger, she could see he had a long cut. Turning to the boy, she asked what happened. At the same

time mother told Chris not to worry. She could take care of the sore.

After cleaning the wound and putting medicine and a bandage on it, she asked Chris how his finger felt.

    Much better replied Chris.

Drying his tears she told him to go outside and play some more. Mother told him he should try not to get the bandage wet or dirty. She opened the garage door so Chris could get into his toy box. Off he went once more.

This was the first time since the beginning of winter that Christopher was allowed to go into the garage and play with all the toys that he hadn’t seen since last fall. Some of the toys he hadn’t played with much last summer seemed new to him again.

Chris was having a great time when his finger started to hurt again. Back into the house he went calling for mother.

What’s the matter young man? She asked as he came through the door.

My finger hurts again! he replied.

His mother looked at his hand and she could see that the finger was a bit red and puffy. She suggested that they make a trip to see the doctor and see what he had to say. Sitting Chris down she went to the phone and called the doctor’s office. Explaining to the nurse what had happened to Chris, she was told to bring him in to be checked by the doctor. The nurse said it would be best to be on the safe side.

A visit to the doctor didn’t bother the young lad at all, because every time he saw Dr. Fred. Dr. Fred is what all the children called him. They all liked him. He was so nice and he always gave out big delicious suckers.
