Introduction to e-leetspeak
Welcome to the world of e-leetspeak. This language was originally created as an unbreakable code for elite (referred to as e-leet or ‘leet) computer users. This code enabled access to restricted areas on the internet web sites, and allowed chats in a language only the e-leet would understand. Using common characters and symbols on a computer keyboard to replace letters, those who knew the code were undisturbed during their chats and sometimes unlawful business.
The language became a favorite of hackers. Those privy to the code referred to it as 1337$|>3/-\|<, which translates to leetspeak
. It is rumored that the United States government worked four years to crack the code. Now that the code has been cracked, give it a try on our entertaining puzzles.
Each puzzle in this book is written in the standardized code of e-leetspeak. The Appendix of this book translates the e-leetspeak symbols into letters of the alphabet. To break the code, refer to the Appendix to change the puzzle symbols to letters, and decipher the phrases. But there is a catch. Letters can be written many different ways!
For instance:
HELLO
Can be written:
|-| 3 |_ |_ 0
or
} { [- | |( )
or even
# 3 1 1 0
Thousands of combinations of symbols can be used to represent the most simple words. Once you learn the symbols, you will find you can incorporate them into other uses, such as making electronic passwords virtually unbreakable. Parents may recognize that their children already use this language in emails, text messaging and on gaming sites. We hope that you find this book both challenging and /=(_)[\] (fun).
