Soccer Fitness V Standard Fitness
There’s no doubt, to play soccer well a fair degree of physical and mental fitness is needed. However, it is also the case that just being fit in the ‘going down the gym’ sense is not enough to be able to play soccer to a high standard, or to a level that gives the best personal satisfaction. What we might call everyday fitness is important, but for the soccer field even more is needed.
In this chapter we will look at what is entailed to achieve everyday fitness, then how that can be built on to get ready for soccer.
Everyday Physical Fitness
What constitutes ‘fit’? That really is down to the individual, and what they wish to do with their bodies, how they wish to look and how they would like to feel. If we take two extremes, an international prop forward in rugby union will be as fit as possible but will look and feel very different to a top class long distance runner.
However, we do need to establish a benchmark, and so with the provisos mentioned above, let us define ‘fitness’ under five headings. We can then look at these headings, below, and explore some of the ways they can be achieved.
Cardiovascular fitness or endurance
