The Courage That My Mother Had
is included in the collection Mine the Harvest, which was published in 1949. The poems in this volume were written in Millay’s later years, and they tend to reflect the mature sensibility of a woman who has experienced her share of hardship. Indeed, one might read The Courage That My Mother Had
as Millay’s autobiographical response to her mother’s death. In this poem, Millay expresses her admiration for her mother’s courage and yearns for her fortitude. She also carefully chooses small details to allude to other aspects of her mother’s personality. Although her tone is wistful, the speaker is not embittered. She acknowledges the belief that material possessions can be handed down but such virtues as courage cannot.
