INTRODUCTION
Welcome to The Second Cup, a collection of daily coaching messages designed to stimulate your thoughts, engage your emotions and serve as a catalyst to help you manifest your best leadership qualities each and every day.
About the name, The Second Cup:
I have a passion for coffee.
Everything about it resonates with me … the arresting aroma, the organic connection to the earth, the soothing warmth, the societal camaraderie … everything. Drinking coffee is much more than an act of physical consumption, in my opinion…..it is an act that carries with it our own personal, deeply imbedded rituals that form the foundation of our intellectual, social and emotional connection to the world.
If you’re anything like me, while the first cup of coffee in the morning provides the physical boost to get you moving, it’s the second cup that finds its way into my brain to engage my thoughts to tackle the day.
And, it’s during that second cup of coffee that I tend to have the most valuable insights…it’s when solutions seem to emerge.
So my intention with The Second Cup is to give the reader a similar ‘second cup’ emotionally energetic boost.
The collection of messages in this book comes from my weekly coaching newsletter, of the same name.
After publishing my first newsletter a few years ago, a good friend sent me a message that included a reference to an ancient Himalayan tradition that speaks to the symbolism attached to the act of sharing cups of tea. According to the tradition, sharing a cup of tea with someone for the first time means that you are strangers.
Sharing a second cup of tea means you are friends.
I consider the time invested in reading my newsletter to be a sign that we have become friends. My commitment to that friendship is to honor the reader’s time by presenting material that is timely, relevant and personal – and , delivered in an efficient, compelling, and easily consumed style.
When selecting the messages for this book from the library of newsletter editions, I used three criteria to make my choices:
1. Each message in this book has generated a number of personal responses that represents at least 30% of the subscriber base at the time of publishing, which told me that the specific message is timely and resonates.
2. Each message has generated at least one personal response that indicated a significant shift in a personal performance, resulting in tangible benefits, which told me that the content is relevant and applicable.
3. Each message has a deep personal connection to me that I felt compelled to share because it brought about some type of a shift in me, which confirms that the content is personal, not just theoretical.
The 31 messages are arranged to provide you with the flexibility to either consume the content sequentially or approach each reading based on a topic that supports a situation you may be facing on a given day.
Thank you for sharing your second cup with me….I hope you enjoy!
