Jena Douglas From powerless to power-girl, I became a transformational singer/songwriter, coach, speaker, workshop host and author of the book, Change the World - Write Your Song! My passion for writing transformational songs began in 1982 at the LA Colosseum when I and 60,000 other concert goers, sang together songs by, The Who. In 1993, I went back to school and got two degrees in music, an AA and BA. Songwriting became more than trying to fit my unique songs into the mainstream music scene but to share my transformational songwriting techniques to other songwriters; Empowering them, their audiences and ultimately the world.

For my son Dylan
Foreword by Apryl Hill
If you’ve stopped to look at this book, there’s a song in you trying to get out! You’re looking for that something to inspire you, tell you how to bring out what’s inside of you. You have something to say! And what better way than in a song! And as you’ve probably noticed, there are a Kabillion
music books out there. Why this one? I’ve been a songwriter/musician all my life and most books I’ve picked up made my eyes gloss over and I felt defeated. Quite simply, Jena’s written a book of education, inspiration and experience, straight to the heart of songwriting.
Songs have been the voice of every generation and some songs are immortal. You can tell the era and what was happening in the world and how people were feeling at that time in history. How and what people were feeling and experiencing at that moment in time was captured in a song. Music and song is very powerful! How many times have you heard or said, That’s my song!
I’ve known Jena Douglas a good part of my life. We met thru music and played in a band together. We became a local Hit Band
in Santa Barbara, California. Really the first time we ever heard one of our songs playing on the local radio station occurred while we were walking down Main Street. We recognized our song playing on the radio of a convertible car stopped at a red light. We scared that poor person, running over to their car screaming, That’s our song!
That’s us!
That’s us!
It was a surreal and unforgettable moment to this day.
Jena went on to formally study music and received a B. A. degree. She’s an active member of numerous song camps, house concerts and more that you will discover. It’s an incredibly supportive community. With Jena’s lifelong vast experience and education, and knowing the challenges we’ve all faced, Jena went about to produce this book, this work of art to help others Write your song
Change The World!

Musician/Songwriter
Preface
The idea for this book was conceived over a Greek cup of coffee and an enlightening conversation with my friends, Steve and Mariella Stockmal. Steve and Mariella know how to make you feel welcomed! They own a music school in Goleta, CA called Studio Music Group,
and they have a set of books on various music topics. They encouraged me to write my own book. They said it was easy. While I have all the qualifications for writing on this subject it has been far from easy. I was intimidated by the massive amount of work it was going to take, but Steve and Mariella shared a secret with me. It was the movie, The Secret. Suddenly, a light went on in the attic of this fuzz ball brain of mine. Everything I have ever done up to this point came together! It was an epiphany! For you see, I love to write (I’m a songwriter) and I have a real passion for sharing the benefits of songwriting! And… I can write a book!
I have enjoyed every moment putting this book together. I loved going through my old school notes and books. It felt good to reacquaint myself with music theory and history, but it took me a long time to finish this book. I started it in 2008, but quickly got discouraged by seeing all the books out on songwriting already. Then I lost my job, moved out of town and was again inspired to finish the book to generate an income. After attending some marketing seminars online (webinars) for new authors, I realized, What this world needs are more soul searchin’, idealistic, Utopian songwriters!
We need songwriters who speak with their hearts to get the conversations going. And from the depths of a songwriter’s soul comes a world of honest communication and respect. OK, it’s a lot to ask for but I was on fire! The book became more than just a how-to book, but a worldly self-help book too! And that’s what finished this book. I got my Mojo back!
It’s funny but I feel like I am over-qualified to write this book because I’ve been using songwriting as a self-help tool for years! I know a lot about music but from personal experience, I know more about the benefits of songwriting as therapy! I have always written songs that are personal in nature. When I was feeling sad, hurt or angry, I would write a song as a way to bring whatever I was feeling to the surface, but after seeing The Secret
and learning about the law of attraction,
I found that the energy I spent on writing about negative feelings was coming back to haunt me. The law of attraction is, like attracts like
(quantum physics)¹. So, if I am writing songs about sadness, hurt and anger then I am attracting more sadness, hurt and anger into my life. And I don’t know about you but I don’t need it! Once more the light went off in my head! But wait! What about the passion and the dynamics that conflict bring to music? You have to be able to express a full spectrum of emotions
to keep a listener (and a songwriter) interested. For me, feeling the dynamics of each opposing emotion is the reason I write! It’s the raw emotions that appeal to me. After all, this world would suck if all we had were cutesy little monotonic happy songs (think: It’s A Small World After All).
I love all types of music, even monotonic happy songs, when I’m in the mood, (except: It’s A Small World After All) but there’s something I don’t understand. Do I need to be a cookie cutter writer of Utopian ideals to truly be happy? No! It’s my world and I create it, the way I want it! At any rate, how am I to know what I am feeling sometimes unless I explore those feelings? In the book, Excuse Me, Your Life
